The title of the review says it all, you're paying for the ability to walk to the beach, the pier or State Street. The property itself is very Motel 6 and the pool deck is tiny, but considering how overpriced Santa Barbara is anyway, it really isn't a bad deal as it's in a good part of town.

Well positioned for downtown Santa Barbara, and close to the beach but in a quiet area. We have been going to the Mason for many years. Once in Santa Barbara, we are always on the go and find the Mason a great place to come and go. It is a very reasonably priced, clean and comfortable. Quite a convenient property to stay if you frequent the beach; just blocks away from West Beach. We stayed 2 nights midweek and were pleased with our accommodations. Basic and clean. We were on the top floor that had just been renovated. We had a small frig and microwave. The room was huge. Quiet from road noise but that's where it ends. We were down the end of a long corridor and could here people returning to their rooms, opening their doors and instead of considerately closing the door behind them they just let them slam. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, and there's a good supply of brochures etc about Sta Barbara. We only stayed one night, but my impression is of a pretty average hotel. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Pool and hot tub were very nice. Two nights and one full day in Santa Barbara was one of the best days of my life. The marina and pier were wonderful and State Street is never ending shops and restaurants.
