The Collegian Hotel & Suites is often praised for its personable staff and tidy common spaces, particularly by those who've had positive interactions with employees like Tammy. However, the experience seems to dip when it comes to the rooms, which some guests find cramped and dated, often lacking basic amenities such as microwaves and fridges.
While the lobby exudes a welcoming atmosphere, the charm doesn't extend to the guest rooms, where maintenance and cleanliness can be hit or miss. Additionally, the value proposition is questioned by guests who feel the cost is steep considering the extra fees and room quality.

Detailed Reviews
The Scholar Hotel, previously the Genesee Grant, was recently remodeled and although I didn't see the original, I found the renovation tasteful and attractive - contemporary while retaining the charm of an older building. I had requested a wheelchair accessible room, which turned out to be offline when I arrived due to HVAC problems. They gave me a King Suite and a 20% off coupon for dinner in recompense, which were lovely but didn't entirely solve the problem. Luckily I can walk and stand for short periods, but getting in and out of a tub with no grab bars to shower was a challenge I don't want to repeat. I suggest that they consider outfitting at least some rooms with grab bars in the shower, taller toilets and other amenities which would be very useful for older guests and those with limited mobility.
The best part of the stay for me was the wonderful service I received from every employee. This is clearly corporate culture because everyone went out of their way to make me feel comfortable, even the bartender who made me a special cocktail at my request.
I would definitely consider staying there again.

The Schoar is a new owner remodel of what was called The Genesee Grand. What was once a warm, cozy property is now another attempt at sleek mid century modern. Comfortable seating has been replaced with low backed airport furniture. The public spaces look like a hospital or undecorated, museum. What was once w charming bar & restaurant area is brightly lit and devoid of any petsonality. The guest rooms are basic.. no mini refidgerators or microwave ovens. The property is hauneed by a simple fact: the rooms are small and the bathrooms are micro. Any attempt at modern decoration fails to add square footage. Our room was not cleaned for two days.... we had to request fresh linens. The staff is the best asset of this property. Everyone was very friendly and eager to extend professional hospitality. The front desk staff was great. The bartenders had personality. The food was good. Too bad the property is ugly.

Clean and pleasant hotel, but service was a bit lacking. Coffee bar was closed and only a single person ran the entire breakfast activities at the restaurant (hosting, serving and, apparently, cooking). They also charge double the rate for EV charging compared to other hotels.

I came from Chicago to Syracuse in June 2021 to look for a house. The Collegian was recommended by my realtor because of its close proximity to campus and the surrounding areas. I reserved the small suite with a kitchen and was presently surprised by its spaciousness. The main sleeping area included a queen bed, desk, TV, small sofa and coffee table. It was clean and pleasant. The bedding was fresh and clean and the bed very comfortable. A separate kitchen with full size refrigerator, dishwasher, coffeemaker, two burner stovetop and microwave were brand new. The kitchen includes a cute little eating area for two overlooking the neighboring building and alleyway. I was able to buy groceries and prepare most of my meals in the kitchen which was essential for me since I am vegan and was unsure if I would find good vegan options. The bathroom is clean and spacious. Shampoo, body wash, conditioner, soap, and lotion are included but you have to bring your own toothpaste or buy it at the front desk. The hallways were clean and smoke free. The grounds well kept. Their are washing machines in the basement but make sure you bring your coins. The Collegian has an impressive gym in the basement. Well stocked with treadmills, elliptical, weight machines, weights, kettle bells, yoga mats, etc. It was clean and safe and also had towels, a water machine, and sani-wipes to wipe down equipment before and after your work out. A great space! The common areas were nice with an available computer and printer in the lobby for guests to use. The restaurant had a few vegan and veg options but I didn't actually try them. The Collegian is in walking distance to SU which is extremely convenient if you have business, conferences, or meetings at the university. I will recommend the Collegian to family, friends and colleagues. It was a great stay!

The Collegian Hotel is an attractive 2 tower older brick hotel with a newer smaller section right next to it. The recent poor reviews are puzzling, since our stay was just about perfect, with the only negative being the bar and restaurant were closed on Monday's, the day we arrived.
Right from the beginning, David was great, even with the no charge for parking, possibly due to our Platinum status he mentioned. We had a special $88 rate for a king deluxe studio suite and he even said he could upgrade us to a kitchen room if we wanted to cook. Our room was in the newer section and was nice and spacious, parking was a breeze and the hotel is located on the edge of the Syracuse campus and downtown. We wanted to go to Dinosaur BBQ and David gave us directions, only 1.5 miles away. I chose this hotel for many reasons including value, which panned out and we would certainly stay here the next time we are in town. As far as service and personality David is as good as we have encountered in our many years of traveling and Wyndham is lucky to have him as an employee and ambassador of their brand.

Extremely disappointed in my recent stay here. I booked a “King Jacuzzi Suite” room 2 months ago for Valentines Day weekend. The whole point of booking was for the jacuzzi tub. I booked before I knew about the renovations going on and the change from Genesee Grande to Scholar Hotel, otherwise I probably would have chosen another place. I called the night before we were supposed to check in to make sure everything was fine, due to the change in ownership, and was hurriedly assured that everything was fine. When we arrived, we were given a standard king room. No jacuzzi tub, even though it is literally in the name of the room I booked, and the only reason we booked the place. When I told the front desk about the mistake, they told me that all the jacuzzi rooms are under construction and unable to be used. I am not sure why we weren’t informed about the fact that the room we paid extra for was not available until after we had checked in and had no choice but to stay as it was Valentine’s Day weekend and no other hotel had suites available. I guess they were hoping we wouldn’t notice? We were trying to get away for a nice weekend but probably would have been more comfortable just staying at home. Not to mention the walls are paper thin, it was extremely loud all night and the toilet leaked all over the bathroom floor the whole weekend. We were “refunded” $40 of the total bill of over $400 for our inconvenience. We were very excited to spend the weekend in this “newly renovated” amazing hotel but our weekend was not what we planned at all. Maybe they should have closed for the renovations instead of booking out rooms that don’t exist and corralling everyone down on the first floor. Definitely won’t return and will urge everyone I know to do the same.

Our stay here was not good. On the third day of our stay, we called to request housekeeping. We said that we would be out all day so they could do it at any time that was convenient. We left around 9:30am and returned at 4:30pm. Housekeeping had not come. We called to request new towles, they brought one new set, not enough for both of us. The ice machine was broken and the response from staff was to suggest we wander around the adjoining building to try theirs. Ultimately staff ended up retrieving the ice from the kitchen of the restaurant which was very much appreciated. Lastly, the toiletries were in dispensers in the shower. Something about them was off. Upon further investigation, both the shampoo and conditioner containers were filled with conditioner and the body wash container was filled with shampoo (image attached). These are all details that really should be fixed by management. We would be hard pressed to stay at this property again.

I have been staying at a hotel on this property every year since 1987. Since the new ownership took over and named the Hotel Collegian they have successfully create dorm feel (more like a dorm on Sunday before cleaning crew arrives). Toilet seat was broken, sink had crack, room smelled and seemed damp. The room had holes in wall where window dressing used to be. The toilet paper holder was loose. The lobby needs a major paint job unless you like the "Spackle look". To top it off the fire alarm went off at 3 am. The walls are very thin and you can count on a late wake up after bars close. I am in shock that Wyndham associates with this dump. The Hotel is understaffed and no maintenance person was on site at night. On the bright side it is close to campus.

I am writing this email at the request of the front desk woman that was working the night of 9/5/21. I apologize for not getting her name but she asked me to share my family's experience with you. We checked in on Sunday September 5th and had booked a 1 bedroom suite. We were given Room 607.
On our way up to our room we entered into the supposedly refurbished side of the hotel only to notice the lobby was on that side was run down. The paint on the walls were chipped and inside the elevator some prior guests had carved their initials into the metal elevator door. The bright blue paint was chipped inside the elevator and the carpet was dirty on the elevator floor. Upon exiting the elevator on floor 6 their was a glass right out side of the elevator door partially filled and was some type of mixed alcoholic drink. As we walked through the 6th floor hallway to our room which was at the end of the hall there were bits of paper or other items littered through the hall way and actually a small plastic bag filled with garbage was dumped on the floor closer to where our room was. We took pictures of the glass and garbage bag. I already felt disgusted and dirty walking through the hall. Arriving at the door to my room there was chipped paint on the door and not just a small chip but very noticeable especially with the walls and doors painted bright blue.
Upon entering the room we immediately walked through the room checking to see if it was clean. Since it was my wife, my son and me staying in the room we were going to use the pull out sofa. My son and lifted the cushions of the couch to see if the pull bed had sheets on it and it did not. I went to call the front desk to ask them for sheets to bring up to our room and when I picked the hotel phone receiver it was filthy. The phone has probably not been wiped down for I don't know how long. Upon waiting for the front desk to locate someone to bring us sheets we then noticed the couch cushions that we had taken off were all stained. My wife and I quickly made the decision that we would not be staying in that room. When we went to the front desk they told us that was the nice side of the hotel so we checked out immediately cancelling our reservation. When speaking to the front desk person she told us that she was the only one on staff that night and there was no one from management available until the morning. She was doing the best she could and very apologetic for the conditions of the hotel. She said the hotel

Had a hotel booked for my son and I to visit college. Ended up with a positive Covid test the day before the visit. Call multiple times with no response and even tried to work through Priceline to cancel reservation
on the phone with Priceline four times who tried to call the hotel with no response. I called myself again multiple times and left many messages with no response.
Two weeks after I told her I would get a response they told me the hotel cannot refund my reservation.
Left multiple messages for the manager and numerous other people with no response back. The lack of customer service is Awful.
These types of places should be Boycotted
