A couple of years since we last visited, during which the hotel had changed ownership, good to confirm that standards remain excellent as before, some of the old staff (retainers are still there) well worth a visit

on friday the 17th of May we took a 3day weekend break at the Borowdale hotel. It was a special offer of dbb for £75 per person per night. We had a supierior room that was fantastic. the 4 course meal was silver spoon service and was excellent, to purchase this as a non resident would have cost £32.but was... More

Recently returned from a 2 day break at The Borrowdale Hotel. Lovely character hotel in a beautiful setting. Rooms were great, of reasonable size and appeared recently renovated to a good standard. We were in a Prestige room, and it was fairly spacious so probably worth the upgrade. Staff very good on the whole, though one or two members of... More

Having booked the stay via Travelzoo, I called the hotel and asked about accessible rooms..I was told they had a groundfloor room that was disabled friendly but was a premier room so a premium of £20 per night. was added to the cost. I booked the room and when I arrived with my friend we were very dissappointed to find... More

My husband and I have stayed here at the Borrowdale Hotel on a number of occasions and have always enjoyed our stay here. On this occasion however it was just me and my 18 year old son (a treat for his recent birthday). We had booked two single rooms on the second floor which were both very nicely furnished and... More

Recently returned from a 2 day break here. the food, the decor and the staff (especially Cath, Emre and Corina all of whom made meal times a true pleasure!) could not be faulted. The weather could have been better but there you go - you can't have everything can you? My only caveat would be - 3 floors but no... More

booked two rooms on Travelzoo deal for a Ruby wedding anniversary. Rate included 4 course dinner each night and breakfast. Rooms had superking size beds and plenty of room and appeared to be recently refurbished as were the public areas. Rooms both had view of the lake and were very quiet. Reception staff were friendly, polite and efficient. The meals... More

Having booked a Travelzoo offer and reading other reviews I wasn't expecting such a wonderful experience. No corners had been cut, despite the more than reasonable price for a two night DBB break. We enjoyed a roomy Prestige room with views of the lake. The staff, a good mix of British and European, were excellent throughout. Even the "grumpy" barman... More

Found a great deal on TravelZoo which included 2 nights stay, breakfast and 4 course silver service dinner on both days, which also included coffee and chocolates after the meal. The deal also included wine tasting, and tea and scones on arrival. Unfortunately the wine tasting wasn't on but we were given a complimentary glass of wine to make up... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Warm and welcoming fires in the Winter and cool drinks and strawberry teas on the lawns in the Summer served with a smile. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The restaurant has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very elegant and comfortable. It also now boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 36 cosy bedrooms all have TV, telephone and hospitality tray and whether you are looking to book a romantic break staying in one of the 4 poster bedrooms, a family holiday with the children, an energetic break walking with your dog or just of couple of relaxing days, there are rooms to suit all. If you are arriving or leaving on a Sunday make sure not to miss the famous Sunday lunch - it is well worth trying, but remember to book your table well in advance, as it is particular popular with both locals and residents. For those looking for dog friendly hotels, we have a small number of dog friendly bedrooms available for well behaved dogs. Please contact reservations for information about our dog friendly accommodation. ... more   less
