- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
-
The Starr first opened its doors in the 15th century as a coaching inn on the Suffolk to London route and since then has had many famous faces pass through its doors, including Jamie Oliver who honed his skills in our kitchen before going to Westminster catering college. In its coaching days travellers would stop overnight and any prisoner being transported to London would be kept in the holding cell that to this day is still in the cellar. In the courtyard, we have converted the old stable block into a comfortable eight room Hotel, all with en-suite bathrooms and free WIFI.The Starr is only 15 minutes’ drive from Stansted airport making it the ideal place for that overnight stop or short break.Breakfast is served in the restaurant where you sit, surrounded by the exposed oak beams of the old Inn.At lunch time you can enjoy a full bar menu in front of an open fire or our lunch time restaurant menu.In the evening after a glass of wine from our extensive wine list you can choose from our famous fine dining or new brasserie menu. Our dedicated team of chefs uses only the finest, freshest ingredients on a daily basis to produce our delicious menus. The Starr also has two function rooms for private events or business use that can cater for between 12 and 40 people.Whatever your requirements, the Starr’s helpful staff can arrange the rooms to suit all occasions. The Starr is situated at the end of the old market place just off the high street with its many varied and interesting shops, ideal for a stroll before lunch.Being only eight miles from the M11 in the Essex countryside we are an ideal base for exploring many local places of interest. From The Roman ruins of Colchester (once the capital of England) to Charles ll palace at Audley End, the surrounding country side is a treasure trove of historic buildings and land. Please note our restaurant is closed Sunday evening and Monday but has full breakfast on these days.
