We previously stayed here for our honeymoon in 2009 and my wife organised a return visit for my birthday. The rectory was as beautiful as I remembered (more so even) and John & Ricky were again excellent hosts. Ricky's food is to die for! If you can you should definitely have dinner there. We stayed in the Craig Goch room with... More

Hello to you in Gloucestershire and we are so pleased that you returned to see us and that you had such a great stay. Ricky really appreciates your comments regarding his food and your review was posted on the very day that we were told that we have been awarded a TripAdvisor certificate of excellence for 2013. We had previously stayed here in 2009; we returned recently to find the location just as idyllic and John & Ricky just as welcoming. The views from the Craig Goch room are delightful and we appreciated the beautiful views from the bedroom; the only thing they did not fix was the weather! The Orangery is a new addition since we... As we keep on writing on here we are just so very flattered that guests come back to stay with us again - indeed last weekend the whole house was full of returnees! So thanks so much for returning after four years and it is pleasing to hear you approve of the changes. Yes, try not to leave it so... More

We are back home from Australia for a few weeks to get married. We decided on a mini break before the wedding to get away from the wedding planning. Having previously stayed at the Old Rectory in 2009 and loved it we decided to come back for our 'pre honeymoon'! The Old Rectory was just as good - if not... More

Bleatings from Tal-y-llyn! As you have kindly mentioned and photographed me, John and Ricky have asked me to respond to this review for them. It was great to meet you both and I am so pleased that ewe enjoyed your return visit perhaps even more than the first one you had four years ago. I was not there then, neither... More

We have visited the Old Rectory on the Lake many times and have just returned from another hugely enjoyable break at John and Ricky's lovely home. 400 previous reviews testify to the beautiful location, the owners' warm welcome and the comfort of the ( newly re-vamped ) rooms. Special mention, though, for the food. Without a doubt, it's the best... More

Dave, it's great to see you both returning to stay with us so often and I am so flattered that you consider my food to be 'the best in the area'! Not too sure what to say in reponse to that apart from my grateful thanks for sharing your opinion with the many folk who obviously read our reviews here... More

We were looking for somewhere special to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary so after trawling through the internet (mainly Sawdays) we found The Old Rectory on the Lake. It ticked all the boxes, it's in Snowdonia National Park, it's quiet, secluded, by a lake, good value and the reviews on here are almost flawless. It did not disappoint! John and... More

A stay at The Old Rectory with John and Ricky lasts a long time for us. It begins when we first book and we spend several happy months or weeks anticipating our stay. We then have a wonderful time during our actual visit, and afterwards spend more time remembering how fabulous it all was. This stay involved a hilarious day... More

This was my second time staying with John and Ricky. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel really welcome and were taken up to our room. I went for a walk down memory lane, literally, as I was lucky enough to have lived in this house when I was a little girl. There are some features that... More

It is so very fitting that you should be our four hundredth reviewer on trip Advisor as The Old Rectory used to be your home! It was amazing how we met you by chance a couple of years ago down a lead mine on the Great Orme in Llandudno and discovered to our utter surprise that as a small child... More

The Old Rectory on the lake has been overlooking Tal-y-llyn, in south Snowdonia for over a hundred years. This imposing residence stands on the foothills of Cader Idris and offers five star luxurious bed and breakfast accommodation in a stunning setting. It is the ideal base for the discerning visitor to explore this particularly quiet and unspoilt scenic area of Wales. We are equidistant between the bustling market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau and the delightful coastal village of Aberdyfi. The Old Rectory on the lake has three double letting rooms - all ensuite - and all look out onto the lake. Our bathrooms upstairs were described as being 'outstanding contemporary ensuites' by the Visit Wales inspector when awarding us five stars.Already our culinary reputation is beginning to spread - indeed we have even been mentioned by name in The House of Commons during a debate on Welsh produce. Our chef can cater for any dietary requirement. The Old Rectory on the lake is licensed. We suggest that this is the ultimate place to unwind; the scenery is breath taking and the silence deafening. All our beds have crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and freshly laundered fluffy towels are in every bathroom and also in the sauna and out outdoor hot tub area which - like most of our windows - looks out over the ever changing Talyllyn - enthusiastically penned in our entry in Alistair Sawday's Special Places to Stay book as ' large, lovely and luminous'.We look forward to perhaps welcoming you here very soon. ... more   less
