Most fun, quirky and memorable hotel on our sixteen night road trip. We decided to extend our road trip of Washington and Oregon's National Parks and scenic places to include John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Having been to the Painted Hills area in early evening we were facing a 90 minute, 70 mile drive to the nearest town with hotels. Imagine our delight to find the tiny town of MItchell (population c150) a few minutes from the Painted Hills with a hotel as one of the ten of so buildings straight from the Wild West. But in an authentic way and not a tourist way. Skeeter, the owner, greeted us and gave us a choice of two available rooms in the Oregon Hotel. We went for one with a private bathroom just to the right of the lobby area. The whole building is a large historic house from a different era. This is the third building (following two fires) and was constructed in the 1930s. Skeeter has been there a long time and she is clearly a much loved local character. She also has several cats, one of who befriended us to our delight. Our private bathroom had a tub but no shower but we were very happy with that as it really was a joy to be in a truly historic property that hadn't been too messed about with. We popped two doors along to the local grocery store for ice which was clearly going to take more than the 5 minutes we had before it closed. It was on several floors and sold everything you could imagine and more on top! It was a real treasure trove which we spent ages in the following morning. We found a great bar a few doors up next to the grocery store which kept the mountains of melons and bag of charcoal, garden items, etc. outside all night. They'd all be gone in the morning if you did that in my neighbourhood (which incidentally is a very nice area in the UK!). We had great conversation with others at the bar and then retired to the hotel veranda with our own drinks and snacks. It was so comfortable there. We were then joined by a delightful young rancher, Rylee, who lived locally. Our lives could not have been more different but we enjoyed chatting with him immensely. Skeeter left coffee and wrapped muffins in the lobby for breakfast which was appreciated as we left quite early. Our short stay is one we will always remember in this unique community in a remote area of Oregon.

Slightly funky, old place that has not materially changed in the last 45 years -- and that is ALL GOOD. Historic classic old "bathroom down the hall" sort of place. As memorable and authentic as they come, even down to the lace doilies on the tabletops. We were here 45 years ago and it was as fun and interesting then as it is now. What a delight to find that it hasn't changed in character or furnishings since. New mattresses and new windows, plush new towels and bed linens look to be the extent of the visible improvements. Piano in the lobby. No TV in the rooms. Hurrah! Located in the tiny friendly downtown of an authentic rural community of Eastern Oregon. A double Tesla charging station is a block away. Across the street an RV "camping" lot adjacent to the river side city park offers 240 V / 50 A at a reasonable cost. Friendly proprietor has enjoyed her cliental for the past 20 years.

I stayed one weekday night at the Oregon Hotel while visiting the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. My lodging had a private bathroom. But, instead of a shower there was a bathtub, which I did not find convenient to use. The room was comfortable, but the hallway, stairs, and the bed were creeky. Street parking in front of the hotel was convenient. Breakfast is very minimal with store-bought pastries to go. Mitchell is a good place to access the National Monument, but there are not many choices for lodging in the area. The Oregon Hotel served the purpose.

At first glance it appears fine then after closer inspection: only 3 outlets in entire apartment, very dirty, electric stove foil filthy, very poor internet, when my husband went to front desk to ask for ice he was told to go to the store and buy it. No soap or shampoo in metal shower, watered down soap pumper in bathroom, The stool top was broken, popped right off, Continental breakfast was a cellophane wrapped sweet roll. RVs parked all around the small apartment. No way fire department could get in.

Perfect location for visiting the Painted Hills. Old historic inn in Mitchell with 11 rooms and two “apartments” out back. Some rooms have en-suite bathrooms and others just have a sink with shared bathrooms on each floor. Quiet hotel and guests were respectful regarding noise. Large front porch with seating. I had reserved Room #3 which is a bright corner room with an en-suite bathroom. Breakfast was just coffee/tea and a packaged pastry, so do bring more substantial food if you need more.

Had a WONDERFUL stay at the Oregon Hotel ! Each room is decorated in antiques and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud. Clean and neat and extremely homey. Makes you feel like you belong. Price is great with continental breakfast and great coffee. Owners Skeeter and John are 2 of the nicest people. So personable and cheerful. They make you feel like family. This is where you need to come to "decompress and recharge" ... yet if you're out for adventure there is PLENTY to keep you busy and happy around Mitchell. Can't wait to come back!

Clean room with friendly host. If you are a light sleeper, I recommend ear plugs or using the fan. It's an older house with creaky floors. perfect location for visiting the John Day Fossil Park locations. Brewery down the street has good food and beers.

I'm tempted to give it five stars, just because the owner was so nice. It's a little worn around the edges, but everything in our room was super clean and comfortable. We stayed in one of the cabins out back, with a full kitchen. It would be a great place as a base for exploring the wonderful natural areas nearby (we were passing through this time, but we'll be back). The muffins and coffee in the morning were a nice touch. It was fun to see people hanging out in the morning, munching and chatting in the cozy lobby.

DO NOT STAY HERE. KEEP MOVING, STAY IN NEXT TOWN PRINEVILLE. Motel run by husband/wife team. Check-in process was on paper, with an actual physical key. Gives you an idea of the place. Before we walked in, it was 100% vacant. Every single room door was open in the motel, and we were told to just pick a room. There were dolls in almost every single room, which was creepy as hell. We had to turn them around facing the wall. Cobwebs covered the light fixtures and corner of the rooms, and every ceiling light fixture in every room had only 1 bulb working (out of 4 in the fixture). The rooms are cheap enough as it is, for a reason. Ours were $65. Most rooms don't have a bathroom, you had to go into the hallway where the shared shower stall was. My room had a tub, but no handheld shower handle. The tub was also missing a spout. It was literally just spewing water out. We didn't bother showering. The decor was eerily chilling - items you'd pickup at an estate sale after a death, you get the jist. Also - the wifi in the motel is really poor. To get any signal, you'd need to be upstairs for the best wifi strength. My travel companion and I hungout upstairs to get better Wifi as the town is in a dead zone (completely dead, we have Verizon). For reference, we were the only 2 people at the motel that night. The motel owner threatened to charge us double if we hung out upstairs, and verbally berated us at 11pm while we were on the work call. This is absolutely unacceptable to threaten guests. This is the kind of town where it's best to keep moving, as you're an outsider. The hotel itself is rundown and needs maintenance, the sign is lit up in neon red light, and sure enough...just like a scary movie, has a flickering light outside. This sends chills up my spine still. Run...just run for your life. Painted hills was great, but stay in Prineville. You can thank me later.

When you're needing to stay in Oregon's smallest county for a night, you take what you can get. This was just about that, and that's fine. The hotel is obviously very old, which can be part of the charm, and the website is quite clear about what you're getting and what you aren't. Not every room has a bathroom, but we paid for one that did. I didn't see that it said it was just a bathtub without a shower, but I don't think that would have changed our plans. Being in Mitchell for a night was a definite culture shock, intensified by the pandemic. As far as I know, Wheeler still has zero cases, and (of course) is quite conservative (fourth most conservative in Oregon based on the 2016 results). We were told that we could take off our masks, but not pushed to do so (as we were at another business in town). Something along the lines of "we're in the dirt all day, so we aren't getting coronavirus" was said, which is very sadly uninformed. I actually find it hard to live in Portland due to how liberal it is, but I do realize I fit better there ideologically than in deep-Eastern Oregon. That said, as long as a business doesn't get political, I can certainly handle differing approaches to life. Being someone that is almost certain he already had coronavirus, and thinking we should just go on with our lives without this overreaction, I can handle "being put in danger" (which I don't think I am by someone not wearing a mask that I interact with for a couple minutes). However, I am going to follow the law (yes, it is a legally enforceable order) and wear mine, and I don't see the point in making me feel bad about that. I just wish businesses would try to stay on the sane side of that line. If you are someone that is worried about coronavirus, you probably aren't traveling to Mitchell, but if you are you probably don't want to stay here or spend too much time in town. Also, I expect to see news about a new breakout in this tourist town soon. Back to the hotel. It was clean, it was creaky, it was creepy at times, the internet was garbage, but it was fine. I don't expect to stay here again, but I don't regret that we did.
