My Husband and I enjoyed a nice get away at the Alfonso's Loft over the Christmas weekend. The room has a wonderful view is clean and very perfect for just getting out of the big city. The Nut Shell Eatery and Bakery is just below the loft where you get your breakfast..with a breakfast token. The only thing we did not like about the room was the plumbing issues and the water really smelled bad!! Be prepared to use the vintage bathtub (there is no shower in the bathroom). The other observation is that the square stays lite 24/7 and is very active until about 3 am then it becomes a ghost town. There is no WIFI as we had previously thought. But there is a TV with DishNetwork. The Nut Shell Eatery and Bakery opens at 7 a.m. if you want to catch an early breakfast.

We chose to stay here, because of the handy central location, but found it had many other benefits. The loft is situated above a good diner(which is where you redeem breakfast tokens, for a hearty start to the day), which became a useful venue for meeting-up with family who were staying elsewhere. Although historic in appearance, the room was clean and airy, with excellent facilities and good air-conditioning(which you will appreciate after a day in the Texas sun), and free muffins which were placed in the room every day. There are many stories related to this room, which I will leave you to find out for yourself, but this merely added to the cultural appeal of the place. The room was serviced by friendly people from the diner, so staff are always on hand to help during the day - they are also friendly people(like most Texans) and added to our enjoyment of the stay. Because this venue is right in the middle of Granbury, it has everything within walking distance. The plumbing is a bit fragile, access is via a long external staircase, so not the place for anyone who cannot manage two flights of steps - and it does get a bit noisy on a weekend, as Texans drive around in their big pick-ups(earplugs recommended for an early night), but the staff and location more than make up for this.

We did quite a bit of research for our 1st Anniversary get-a-way, and we finally decided on Alfonso's Loft in Granbury, Texas. We were so glad that we did. Granbury is a gem in and of itself because though it is only 45 minutes from Fort Worth, it felt like we were hours away. Alfonso's Loft is located in the 1st building you see as you approach the historic square, on the 2nd floor above the quaint Nutshell Eatery & Bakery. The building has been there for a very long time - rumor has it that the space downstairs used to be a saloon where John Wilkes Booth - that's right, the guy that shot Lincoln - worked incognito. The location is absolutely unbeatable - the gigantic windows open up to a view of the busiest part of the square, with the old courthouse, Granbury Live, and other countless shops and restaurants all within sight. The Opera House sits on the same side of the square as Alfonso's Loft, as well as the Coffee Grinder, The Art of Chocolate Shoppe, and other fantastic restaurants. We absolutely loved having everything within such short walking distance. The room itself is huge yet cozy. The bed was amazingly comfortable - perfect for sleeping in. We desperately wanted to avoid any stuffy and overly-victorian decor, and Alfonso's Loft had just the right amount of vintage touch and antique furniture - no roses and doilies here! Nothing but charm. We loved the tall ceilings and the enormous windows...and that view! The bathroom is comfortable, and we enjoyed the experience of bathing in an old pedestal bathtub - but our only complaint was that there was no shower head...so washing my long hair was a bit of a task. However I will say that it added authenticity to our experience in a room with such history! The "breakfast" part of our stay at this B&B included two vouchers to the Nutshell Eatery & Bakery downstairs. The Nutshell does all of its baking in-house, which means better, healthier, tastier breads and desserts. The food was pretty good, but don't bother with the coffee. All-in-all, we loved staying at Alfonso's Loft. We were so comfortable and happy that we had chosen to stay there. It was hard to leave - so it's safe to say that we will most definitely be back!
