I was initially prepared to be disappointed for although the location was fabulous could Ahilya Fort live up to my expectations as this was one of the most expensive places I stayed in last year in India. However this is a class act with meals served in different parts of the Fort all of them high quality and even wines... More

Aaaaaahhh-ilya! From Prince Richard Holkar flying in to host a cooking demo for our group (Travel Deep EYHO) to Kuntabai's inimitable service, from Mr Maitra staying well past the end of his work day to secure my laptop to Mr Rana allowing us to a late, late check out ("This is your home")...Ahilya is a tough act to beat -... The Ahilya Fort offers the traveller a most unique experience. Its location is awe inspiring, the staff superb and the atmosphere like nowhere else we have ever been. The setting overlooking the Narmada River and the ghats is unbelievably beautiful and the village behind a great place to walk around with the added advantage that you do not get pestered... More

A simply outstanding experience. Perhaps my favourite stay in India ever. The fort is wonderful, the service impeccable, the food out of this world (and they changed the menu quickly when they learned about our particular dietary needs). Loved the fact that they catered specially to our 8 year old's food idiosyncrasies without battering an eyelid. We liked the fact... More

Ahilya Fort has the most charming location with the backdrop of temples and the narmada river flowing alongside. The hotel rate is very pricey but it is a relief that it has an all inclusive policy where we did not have to keep signing chits for drinks and laundry so on.. They offer great delicious meals with combination of western... More

Previous reviews have described all that is wonderful at Ahilya Fort...the all inclusive policy which is a great relief in India when it seems we travelers shed rupees like maple trees shed leaves in the fall.....the atmospheric grounds, rooms and very good food. BUT any hotel this quality should be aware of issues with mosquitos and the potential health risks... More

I know nowhere else quite like this. India has plenty of forts and palaces that have been converted into hotels – some more immaculate than Ahilya, many less so – but none that I know is run quite like this one. One of the most attractive features is that everything, I mean everything is included in the price: three outstanding... More

We didn't stay here any nights (because of our low budget), but my wife had her birthday while visting in Maheshwar and we had here a perfect bithday dinner - really wonderful. They even prepared us special vegan meal (well, for the price of 1500 for one person it's quite logic)... and for the dessert a special birthday cake made... More

The Ahilya Fort has one of THE best locations for a hotel. The height of the fort provides a fabulous view and helps keep noise away. The most interesting aspect about this heritage stay is the way the public and private spaces intertwine. The fort is home to the hotel which is the private space and to a temple and... More

Three days and two nights was all it took for me to forget that I was in a country with a billion people and 4.8 million cars! For in those three days I never saw a single car and never more than a dozen people at the most :) Most of my family in India went- 'Maheshwar? Where? Why?', when... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The majestic 250 years old Ahilya Fort sits on the edge of a cliff, high above the sacred Narmada River, surrounded by the beautiful and unexploited town of Maheshwar. The views over the river and ghats are exceptional. Replete with myths and legend, Ahilya Fort offers guests a rare chance to get off the tourist trail and an abundance of things to see and do. With the fabulous, deserted city of Mandu nearby and the famed island temple of Omkareshwar even closer, this is a place at which to spend time and relax but from which you can also explore the area, undisturbed by the other tourists – a stroll down through the town to the ghats is a must. The food is delicious and it’s all-inclusive so, once here, you pay for nothing – be it food, excursions or e-mail! The pool is lovely; terraces and shady areas abound; meals are taken in different areas of the fort; the charming rooms and tents have superb views, balconies & gardens; the weaving center here is famous nationwide. A boat trip at sundown is something you will never forget. Truly a memorable place where you could spend days or weeks! There are 10 bedrooms scattered around the premises and the rates include full board and all excursions. It is the most perfect base for visiting Mandu (1 hour away) and is just a 2-hour drive from Indore. It makes the perfect place to end or start a holiday, as there is so much to do. From here you may also visit Dhar, Baneshwar and Omkareshwar. Being a gourmet himself, your host Prince Richard Holkar has the highest standards and the food here is delicious. Staying here is like a time wrap as the village is still enclosed within the fort itself and is truly wonderful to explore in your own time. ... more   less
