The hotel is a historic building with not so bad rooms in an ok neighborhood. The staff with the exception of two are all rude and unhelpful. Friday nights bring out the bar hopping drunks and the police in full force. We brought our 2 dogs and the front desk clerk who checked us in saw them both puppies but... More

Where should we start, the declined credit cards, the lies about taking care of the bill, skipping out only to be called back to knowingly take care of your bill with a returned check? The fact that the room lost more than 30 days of use due to the odor from the 2 Dogs. Still that room is damaged from... More

I love historic hotels but this one could have been better. Seemed clean, safe, and location was great for walking around in Portsmouth. Also liked the fact that parking and internet was included in the price. The biggest negative for me was the lack of hot water in the shower. At best it was warm. There is a trick to... More

The location of this hotel is at one corner of Portsmouth's beautiful historic district. It is within an easy walk of great restaurants and a historic movie theater. It is also an easy walk from the inexpensive ferry to the heart of Norfolk tourism activities - Battleship Wisconsin, Navy Base cruise tour, and many others. The hotel is a very... More

My friend and I stayed at this place for 5 nights, making the choice exclusively based on online reviews. I'm not sure how to rate my personal experience other than saying it was "unusual". This is not one of your typical chain hotels. The room was OK except for the fact that there was a work chair but no table.... More

This is an older hotel but the rooms are nice although they should upgrade the televisions. Bed was unusually comfortable. The continental breakfast is not worth eating. go around the corner and have a real meal. Coffee in lobby was excellent. My wife left a special pillow in the room and staff was not very good about getting it back... More

The Dinwiddie is a quaint historic hotel with lots of open space in the rooms. The floor plans are nice. Drawbacks: The gym is very small but okay if it's only one or two people working out. The walls are thin so you may hear outside noises which is why I'm sure it's rumored the hotel is haunted. The kitchenette... More

Portsmouth has a dearth of decent affordable hotels, the choice is between very expensive waterfront hotels or sleazy strip motels. That makes this the best option under the circumstances. I've rated it average as it really isn't special. I have a hard time thinking of something as historic when it's only a few years older than me. The rooms are... More

The Governor Dinwiddie Hotel comes up on the GPS (a few years old) as something else. It is a 1945 structure so has all the refinement and problems of a grand old hotel. We had a 7th floor room with very high ceilings and large space. It was terrific. The hotel has no real amenities. Breakfast is provided in a... More

On the way from Philadelphia to Ocracoke, NC we thought we would stop off somewhere. Portsmouth, VA was a place we had never visited. And...we prefer older, more historic, down-town hotels. Reviews for the Governor Dinwiddie Hotel seemed a bit mixed, but we gave it a try. Nice property. Friendly and helpful staff. Rooms a bit dated but nicely appointed... More
