Most things about this place are essentially mediocre. The front desk staff are not “most things” - they were extremely helpful anytime I needed anything. Otherwise - the room was ok, clean enough. Towels were ok, a bit scratchy, but rare is the hotel these days where I think the towels are good. The bed and pillows were comfortable enough. There’s no vent in the bathroom, which kind of sucks when you’re taking a warm shower. The WiFi was pretty decent here (better than some places). My tv kind of sucked for image clarity, it was permanently not sharp of an image when I was watching. Some people say the neighborhood is a bit shady but I wasn’t really feeling that. I did notice that there seemed to be quite a few long-term residents here, but I had no issues with any other guests/activities/pets here (there were some well-behaved doggos). If you’re expecting five-star accommodations, high class and luxury to the nines, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for somewhere clean to rest your head, you could do a lot worse than here.

We stayed one night as we were in town for some leaf-peeping and the Frontier Culture Museum (which was fantastic). Our family had stayed at this property about six or seven years ago and had enjoyed the pool in summer and there were no cleanliness or maintenance issues that I remember, so we booked in again (without reading reviews). The staff was friendly enough at check in, but given the reviews we had read, we checked the cleanliness of the sheets. They were laundered, but old and had stains that would have come out with better bleaching. Since we were only staying a night and in a hurry to get to a dinner with our friends, we did not bother to ask for the beds to be remade. The floor lamp did not light, and that was an easy fix--it was unplugged, but in the course of plugging it in, I observed the dirt and dust bunnies in the corner and a dead bug. My son said he thought he saw a roach or waterbug, but that was the only bug sighting--thank goodness. The room had a musty smell. The tub and toilet were clean but had hard water stains that likely could have been removed by LimeAway or scrubbing with pumice. There were dust bunnies under the bureau and desk. (Clearly, housekeeping had been careless.) Not great, but not worth changing a room, as we had the last ground floor nonsmoking room and did not want to have to go up to another floor. The hot water situation was not great in the morning. The tub needed to be recaulked and there was paint peeling on the bathroom door that should have been sanded an retouched. I don't recall these maintenance or cleanliness issues the last time I stayed at this HoJos. The continental breakfast was OK, but nothing special. For one night, it was barely adequate, but I likely will stay elsewhere next time I stay in Staunton, as I expect a cleaner, better maintained room when I am paying over $100 a night.

Oh my… I booked this hotel before reading the reviews. After reading, I decided to cancel my reservation, only, it was too late. I stuck it out and thought surely it can’t be that bad. It IS! Hair in the sheets, 😣 dirty toilet, dirty coffee maker, dirty shower curtain, broken phone, TV doesn’t work. I could overlook everything EXCEPT the dirty sheets. That’s where I draw the line. I called downstairs shortly after I decided to go to bed for the night and was told the sheets couldn’t be changed, but that I could switch rooms. I agreed and then I was hung up on. I guess I’m expected to pack up all my things, go downstairs, hope for a clean room, and then unpack again. I am at a loss. Too many of these reviews say the same thing. Do not stay here. Pitch in a few extra bucks and stay somewhere else. You won’t be sorry.

This was what I remembered when I was young as the Howard Johnsons were. This motel was clean and I was pleasantly surprised after reading several other reviews. Location is great; easy walking distance to downtown. Could use updating but over all, a decent place to stay.

Breakfast was not really existent. Check in young lady was pleasant, but overnight and morning staffers were disinterested and plain rude. Locals / and or residents screaming profanities outside too. Town of Staunton was really charming though. I would visit again, but not stay at the hojo'

We were passing through, staying for one night and wanted a lower priced hotel. We are ok with simple rooms with few amenities as long as it's a clean room. Forget about that. The place was filthy. Upon arrival the front desk woman was in her house slippers watching TV with some friends. She was friendly and kind but it was far from a professional atmosphere. The room was filthy. Animal and human hair was on and in the bed. The sheets had not been washed...I'll not leave TMI but let's just say we could tell a couple used the room before us. The desk clerk was quick to give us a new room but commented how the cleaning lady was elderly and needed to be fired but she was related to the owner so....we couldn't get out of there fast enough.

I've stayed at this HoJo before (and gave positive review) and am pleased to see that the pride they take in their clean rooms and well-manicured grounds is more evident than ever. I'm a budget traveler and frequently take the steps. Theirs were immaculate and freshly painted. (I'm kinda like the restaurant reviewer who checks out the cleanliness of the establishment's bathrooms...). An added bonus is you can catch the Staunton 25-cent trolley (does a loop downtown and back) by walking a few steps out the door.

We spent one night here, traveling home from vacation. The hotel is older, but is extremely clean. The beds were comfortable and things have been updated. After reading some of the reviews, I was a bit anxious about staying here, but glad we gave it a chance.

The Staunton Howard Johnson by Wyndham is run down and unsanitary. There were blood stains on my sheets (not my blood), the towels and coffee maker were dirty, there were ants in my room, and the lobby smelled like weed and curry. This is not a good hotel choice for a business traveler. It's a good choice for someone receiving public assistance who wants to rent by the week or month. The owners should be ashamed of themselves for allowing their hotel to fall into disrepair. The hotel needs to be completely renovated or condemned. I will not stay here again.
