This is great, small B & B just outside Hilo. The morning sunrise was beautiful accompanied by a great breakfast of fresh fruit, macadamia nut pancakes, Hawaiian sausage, coffee and tea. The hosts were gracious. The sheets were crisp and the towels luxurious. More

I am still feeling the aloha from my recent visit to Hale Kai!! I have visited here twice and always look forward to returning to Rick and Maria's place. The rooms have an ocean front view, and I love the lullaby of the waves putting me to sleep every night. After a restful night I awoke to a gorgeous sunrise... More

I really enjoyed my stay at this b&b, because you could hear the sound of the sea just outside as you were falling to sleep. The views are wonderful, as others have said, and the hosts were really helpful and informative. What I hadn't realised beforehand was that this was a bit of a way out of Hilo. Only a... More

If you book here, the bamboo room is the only way to go. All other rooms are not very private as you have to walk past them to get to your room. Also there is no AC so your windows are open which is great to hear the surf but also means no privacy. Location and view were amazing. Even... More

My wife and I recently made a spontaneous decision to spend 1 night in Hilo; we were spending a week at another vacation rental approximately 80 miles away and wanted to see Volacanoes National Park at night. Our search for a quick B&B lasted around 2 hours when I found myself engaged in conversation with Ric at Hale Kai. We... More

We love our experience so much we keep going back to stay with Maria and Rick. The Pele Suite has exceed our expectations each time and the culinary experience is devine. The hospitality offered by the owners is another reason we love to return. The views of the sunrise off the deck are breath-taking. We have scheduled another return to... More

I am just back from my third stay at Hale Kai in Hilo, HI. I go to Hilo for work several times a year and am thrilled to have found such a wonderful place to stay (after trying local hotels and a different B&B). Ric and Maria could not be more accommodating. They are extremely knowledgeable about the area and... More

Rick and Maria have a great place. Perched 40' above the best surf spot on the windward side of the island. We got in late. The low voltage lighting led us thru the garden to the Bamboo Room. We were speechless as we rolled over in bed to watch the magnifacent sunrise exactly in the middle of the huge east... More

If you like good food and intelligent conversation; this is the place for you. First, the rooms are clean, well appointed and all have ocean front views. Maria is an excellent cook and the breakfasts are varied, freshly prepared and substantial. Ric is a retired Geologist/professional photographer and will send you to places that are both informative, unique and reasonably... More

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of November during a 2 weeks vacation to the Hawaiian islands. Our overall experience was enjoyable. Rick and Maria have a great little business going but the rooms are in need of some updating. We stayed in the Pele room which is the largest of the four rooms but is located along... More
