The Hilo Bay Hostel is indeed in a central location. But this means, if your room is facing the street, you have to have an either very tight sleep or earplugs. It almost doesn't matter if the window is open or closed. Very noisy. There is only one shower room for girls and one toilet room, where one of the... More

Hilo is a sweet, little town with some of the old Hawaii feeling still evident. But, we don't have much to offer in terms of affordable, overnight accomodation. Between worn-out Billy's and the luxury and expense of the Shipman mansion the only reasonable for singles (can choose dorm or private room) or families (ensuite private room and bath) is the... The location of this hostel is really good-right in town Hilo, walking distance to market, restaurants, etc.... Hostel was clean for the most part-showers could have used a little attention. Too many long term people for me. It's understandable in a place that has a short tourist season, but there did not seem to be a lacking in tourists. I... More

We spent 1 night, family of 4, in the private room with ensuite. The room appeared to be recently redone, nicely decorated, beautiful bathroom with shower. Friendly owner who checked us in. The street out front is busy, however being a Sunday evening it wasn't too noisy. Great location, free parking in a lot just diagonal to the hostel. Definitely... More

No idea what to expect so everything was new. Loved the building - it was once the Burns Hotel and still has lots of the original features like polished wooden floors, post boxes, etc. Dorm room right above the intersection and it was fine (earplugs). Lots of windows. Free WiFi for those of us with laptops which was brilliant. Beds... More

Stayed for 2 nights in late November -wanted the ensuite but they didn't have it available for the first night, so I stayed in the other private room and then switched the second night. From the moment I came in, the staff made me feel like at home. Had no problems checking in way early. The room was fine -no... More

I've stayed at a lot of hostels and this is the first that I felt could have been a hotel. It was wonderfully clean and nicely decorated. They definitely put a lot of thought into the rooms rather than just shoving a couple of beds in. The staff was friendly and went out of their way to give me directions... More

I wasn't too sure what to expect...I hadn't stayed in a hostel before. The room was spacious and clean and had a fridge with complimentary bottled water. It was a great spot...Unfortunately we heard a lot of street noise throughout the night (no fault of hostel but it is a noisier area of town). We were veyr happy to use... More

This hostel was our first accomodation in Hawaii and we felt instantly at home. It is located downtown with grocery stores and restaurants nearby. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our room was not to small with enough room for everyone. The kitchen is well-equipped and in the common area we had great conversations with other travellers (greetings to... More

If you are looking for a hostel where you can meet people and have a drink after your meal and talk a little to other travellers then DO NOT go to this hostel. The staff is unfriendly and quiet time is at 10pm, which would be ok but you are not even allowed to sit in the common room and... More
