The uppermost floor (3rd) appears to have had the most recent attentions, in terms of decore, maintenance, etc. There's also an impression that quiter, more responsible guests are placed there. The "first" floor (2nd floor in bldg) is really pretty bad. Shabby, dirty, loud. A number of down-on-luck ongoing "residents" included a drunk, rude persons, possibly mentally disorderd, hostel rule scofflaw flaunters (use of kitchen, reasonable time with "shared" resources, etc.). Always dirty dishes in the sinks, bits of food/garbage on the floors. The bathrooms are mostly wet and messy, often with unflushed toilets. And some folks like the ever-present cheap radio or tv constantly going in their room. Located directly below, on the ground level, is a loud, obnoxious bar/club with a driving, not-too-muffled beat throbbing on and on and on until closing time at around 2am. This and several other bars on the block typically attract loud, boorish people that congregate outside on the sidewalks and hoot and yell until well after bar closing, making it near impossible to really enjoyably relax or sleep. Staff is surprisingly unfriendly and unprofessional, and appears to include a coupla' guys too broke to pay for their lodging or something so are working in trade or the like. While the place advertises 24/7 reception, the fact is that the "office" shuts down at about 10pm and there is no real onsite "management" available after that. So the "guests" (especially the perpetual ones) do as they wish... all night. This included getting fall-down drunk, repeatedly yelling in the halls, stealing food from the kitchens and banging around in there, etc. Very poor maintenance and housekeeping work. Surfaces are unsanitary, with crud in corders and around edges. Don't go barefoot or even in socks, as most every walk through the place will pick up bits and pieces of crud on the bottoms of your feet. The supposedly "full equipped" kitchens are a random collection of Goodwill Store grade kitchenware. Many missing items, like can openers, decent sized bowls, etc. A couple of the refrigerators are a joke. And food gets stolen. The bathrooms are only worthwhile immediately after the cursory, poor cleaning is done. The bath-tubs don't work as the plumbing has been changed to only allow for showers and there are no plugs for the tubs. The beds include a mongrel collection of "bunk" beds, including metal ones that creak, squeak, sproing, and twang at the slightest movement and oddly loud. The "linens" were torn, stained sheets with no replacements in a week. Towels are a mongrel, used collection they'll sell you for $5.00 each. And it's not the cheapest deal in town, or at this level of unfortunate. …
