When you book the Y, it is luck of the draw when it comes to room allocation. Basically, you get what you're given and you like it or lump it. Most who check in will know this and the result will come as no shock. Some upgrading is taking place but on the whole, you will get the most basic... More

I made a group booking in the West Side YMCA, with a group of fellow travellers. While I wasn't expecting much, I did get more than I expected. The rooms were what I was thinking they would be: utilitarian. Basic, get the job done. Nothing fancy, at all, some of the others had problems with their rooms. However, the issue... More

This is my third visit to New York and third stay at West Side YMCA. For its great location near Columbus Circle and central park, I will say the price of the room is cheap enough to make it a good choice. However, I want to say a few words about the bathroom. I stayed on the 8th floor in... More

Hi Yen-Yu, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the West Side YMCA. We appreciate your repeat stays with us, and your honesty about the issues with the bathrooms are very helpful in making sure these issues get addressed and solved. While I am glad that you enjoyed your experience with the semi private bathrooms, I... More

I recently went on a trip to NYC with my Uni course, so we were aged from 19-21, with the exception of the 3 lecturers who came with us. We stayed on the 9th floor, which I believe is a renovated floor. To start off, the YMCA isn't as bad as people are saying. After reading some reviews on here,... More

Hi Luke, Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review. The feedback we receive from guests is extremely helpful to us, as we are working to improve guest experiences at the West Side Y. I apologize about the initial confusion with your room - I will check in with the staff to see where the communication breakdown... More

This hostel is definitely for young people. There are bunk beds in rooms and you have shared bathroom. There were plenty of teenagers on my floor, so while staying there I felt almost like in a dormitory. Apart from that his hotel was not renovated for ages. The bathroom seems to be old and wasn't very clean. Anyway I always... More

Still not cheap, and there are now better-kept places to stay in NYC (Equity Point on Times Sq for example), and fixtures and fittings are getting a bit rickety now. Wi-fi only available in the downstairs area, something to do with the age of the building (although I've stayed in plenty of older places all over the world which have... More

I had booked the West Side YMCA for one week (a single room with shared bathroom for more than 90 GBP per night), based on earlier stays there. When I arrived I realized that the place has deteriorated a lot since a year ago: the room (on an "unrenovated" floor) was tiny and spare, with spots on the floor and... More

been there many times ( like 3 or 4 ), cause it's one of the cheapest opportunity in NYC. yeah, the rooms are very basic and tiny. in my opinion there wasn't nothing to complain about cleanliness. you can't beat the location near columbus circle, times square and central park, If you also like to meet cool people from all... NY friends said this was actually and "upscale" Y and was suppose to be very nice and super inexpensive by New York City standards.....NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I paid $95 a night rate, available only if booking online. This was higher than the lower rate of $75 a night because it supposedly came with a semi-private bath. One would think that mean perhaps... Over the years I've done a lot of travelling and staying in a real variety of accommodation. I see a lot of people say this hostel isn't great, friendly or clean.
