Great place to stay. Secure. Gated. Fair prices. Clean and quiet. Close to good places to eat, the beach, and the bus line. A major landmark was close by so I knew where to get off the bus (the statue of the woman with a goose). Walk to big grocery store or to ABC stores.

This hostel doesn’t have the best location, but it was definitely the cleanest hostel I’ve ever been to; dorms and bathrooms were super clean, the mattress was somewhat comfortable, and the aeration was nice so it wasn’t too hot at night. The place is quiet and kept in order, which is good for some people, but the clientele does seem to be older, meaning it may not be the best place to meet new people as a 20 y/o solo backpacker, and there are also a tone of rules to follow, so definitely don’t expect to party there. Overall had a great experience, the staff was super nice, and despite the location, the low price and the cleanliness makes it worth it in my opinion.

Response from Hostelling Int'l Honolulu, General Manager at Hostelling International Waikiki
Responded Oct 18, 2023
Thanks for taking time to share your thoughts. Since this is a residential area we need to think of our community to keep it organized. When the trees have fruits we share with guests-items like guavas and calamansi.

Can anybody even sleep in this place? We visited during summer last year. There was no air conditioning and bugs were everywhere. The mattress provided no back support whatsoever. To make things worse, we could hear everything that was happening upstairs, in bathrooms and outside our windows. We got absolutely no sleep. Employees were hostile and nasty towards us for no reason, which also didn't help our impression of the hostel.

The whole place was old and dirty. Bathroom was ridiculously dirty (you are not allowed to wear shoes in the building, which makes things so much worse). No AC or heater. Loud noise at night because the walls were so thin. Uncomfortable bed with no back support. Rude and unfriendly owner who frowns and yells at customers to move. Needless to say, I couldn't get out fast enough.

A wonderful place to stay. Staff speaks English and German. Clean, quiet, and safe. Security gate controls the entrance to the building complex, so you can leave the windows open in your room and not worry about stuff walking away. House rules are simple and straight forward. A big kitchen that is clean and organized with several tables to sit at and eat or surf the internet. A tv and a couch and library with tour books about the Island or just books to read when it is raining. Female dorms, male dorms, and private rooms. No A/C, but lots of fans. Walk to the beach, to great food, the grocery store, or the bus lines. Free loaner gear like beach chairs or bogie boards. This is not a place to party. No BS. No drugs. No raunchy behavior. No leaving messes for other folks to clean up! If you are badly behaved you will be asked to leave and rightly so! The place is always fully booked, so they do not need to tolerate guests who are drunken fools! Just a really great place to stay while you enjoy HI and explore the island. I have stayed here a few times and it is always wonderful!

So many mixed reviews. Let’s get it out there straight away. If you want ‘party Central’ then this isn’t the place for you. If however, you want a safe, clean well run hostel in an absolutely amazing location then this could be the place for you. Dropped of in my Uber cab the place was closed. So, say and waited. Paul comes along, introduces himself. I was expecting an ogre from the description in some of the reviews. Not at all. Paul was pleasant if formal. Checked in and house rules covered, the smiles spread and we relax. I’m happy not to be sitting drinking in the hostel. Your in a little piece of heaven in Oahu, get out and enjoy it. Shake sand from shoes, come on .... is that such a hardship. Consider others staying in the hostel. I would say so . Paul was an out and out gent. My type of person. What you see is what you get and that’s the head of a great team. Christopher , who was managing the hostel for much of our stay was again great. Kept the place spotless with the young woman who seemed to be always cleaning. Doing small repairs and painting. The accommodation itself is basic. Bunk beds with a small shower room/ toilet but perfectly adequate. The only addition to make HI Waikiki Stella would be some a/c in the room but that’s being picky. Great kitchen to cook with loads of utensils , pots etc . It was a joy to prep some food with the sound of the birds and like drifting on the evening breeze. Step outside, turn right and walk to corner, turn right and less than 500steps... yip, steps not yards or feet and your standing on Waikiki Beach, right where I took the picture. Plenty of bars for a drink. Plenty of music. So really no need to make the hostel party central. I loved my stay here. 6 nights and I could have stayed for 60. Paul and Christopher.... thank you for your hospitality, advice on buss timetables, places to visit and the like, but most of all running a clean , safe hostel. A couple of gents of the highest order. Aloha

Great location at waikiki. It’s walking distances from eatery, beaches and shops. Be aware it has a few rules such as no alcohol consumption, return key the night before if leave early morning before office hours, and clean shoes before coming back from the beach etc. generally people are friendly and helpful. Has fan which helps if it’s hot weather.

Thank you for your feedback. We have had experiences where too much alcohol results in angry exchanges between guests, risky behavior (walking on the railings)...for sake of safety for all. Good travels to you!

The hostel is great value. You cannot beat the location and the amenities are good. You have access to a good kitchen, free snorkel gear, and beach towels. And the hostel is kept clean. The beds are OK and the rooms were quite warm. The staff were helpful. It is an older hostel. Given it's location it is excellent value and if you are comfortable in hostels then you'll be comfortable here.

If don't care at all about anything except for the price then you can stay here but I will tell you what I think about it.  - Very bad attitude and suprerrude ladie working at the hostel. Worst one I've been checking in with since 2008 when I started using backpacking alternatives. She should totally not work with service of any kind and totally made me regret paying for that hostel. (Pierced one) also other travellers in my room had problems with her attitude , rest of staff was OK. - it's not good taken care of so the outside area is dirty, u don't wanna use the sunbeds or anything.  - plenty of rules. The one that was really BAD and disgusting was the "no shoes" rule and it was dirty all around so u had to walk around barefoot in another people's brushed-off-hair at the toilettarea for example . No GO!  - rooms are Hot at daytime and cold in evenings but no extra blankets was offered or to be find in the rooms.  I would never recommend this hostel to someone and will never return. Not even the location made it worth it.  Stay away and pay a little extra for a better place.
