Grotty, tired and exceptionally disappointing. From the word go, we had an appalling welcome from disinterested staff at reception which set the scene for the rest of the stay! Room was dark, badly furnished and missing everything you would want like toiletries and a hairdryer, poor reading lights, no hooks, bath plug was grotty, things were broken... We nearly left... We chose this hotel because of its proximity to the battlefields area and found it a convenient location. The hotel was very helpful in organising a tour for us and we were lucky to have a superb guide - Eddie from Bushbabies. Our room was a courtyard room which was quiet - the hotel is on quite a busy road.... More

Nice country hotel in the main street of Dundee. Close to a number of different battlefield sites. The hotel will also arrange tours to the battlefields. Rooms are quite basic, but clean and spacious. The downside of the location is that you are very close to the local mosque, meaning you get woken at 5am with the call for prayer.... More

Don't expect luxury at this hotel or you will be disappointed. This is a very old hotel and has the character to go with it, consequently the rooms tend to be odd shapes and sizes. Our room was on the second floor in the main building. The bedroom was small but the bathroom was large. In fact it was a... More

I don't know what to make of this place. One of the owners had died late last year and his wife was away in Namibia so perhaps it was run more casually than before. The first room we were told how to get to was very much below standard, but when we complained, we were shown room 1 which we... More

we stayed for one night whilst on a battlefield tour. The hotel is adorned with Zulu War (and a little Boer War) memorabilia which gives a lovely atmosphere. The room i had was spacious with a small walk in wardrobe. rooms wer very clean and had all you needed. Mine was facing the main road and was a little noisy.... More

Stayed for 2 nights as part of our SA tour, staff at reception helped with urgently need medication for my wife without any bother , restuarant staff were just great as was the food, bar was a little quirky. Rooms were as built back in 1886 not quite as comforable as previous residences but boy did it have character ,... More

Good sized and comfortable room with a huge shower/bathroom. Lounge area and bar were very welcoming with lots of historical information available. Good place to access the Battlefields sites. Parking secure. Small courtyard is a delight with its blend of trees and flowers with nice seating areas to enjoy the peace. Only drawback for us was the coal-fired furnace at... More

Initial contact by email was quick, efficent and effective. Helpful suggestions given willingly which later proved to be invaluable- all this before check in! Travelling with well travelled, family from Durban, they were exceptionally impressed with the all round quality of this establishment as were we. Food was fabulous authentic "pub grub"- plentiful. Bar ambience and hospitality marvellous resulting in... More

As a South African, I've noticed a regrettable tendency for hotels in this country to tend to overcharge for their services. I believe this hotel is a notable exception. I arrived in Dundee late one evening, and missed the hotel completely, since it faces onto the rather unprepossessing main road of Dundee, and is a bit hard to miss. I... More
