I recently traveled with Access Tibet tours to Mount Everest. Our guide, Nam, was excellent. We made frequent "bush stops" and he pointed out all kinds of sites along the way and wowed us with his knowledge of Buddhism. We had the option of staying in the "guesthouse" or the "tent". Our group of 10 opted for the tent experience.... More

We were quite weary of all the bad reviews this place had received previously, but it wasn't too bad. The four of us got a room to ourselves, and while it was very cold and the sheets were dubiously clean we had our own sleeping bags so we had no trouble sleeping throughout the night (altitude sickness aside). The pit-hole/bathroom... More

After reading the reviews on TA, I was excited to be visiting base camp but also dreading our night at Rongbu Temple Hotel (Rongphu/ Rongbuk Monastery Hotel - all the same place!) I needn't have worried, because it really wasn't that bad. Our room contained two single beds, a wash stand (but no water) and a dressing table. When I... More

This place is really roughing it. Beds are not very comfortable, rooms are not heated, bathroom is another buidling with holes in a concrete floor. But this is as good as you are going to get. You get solid walls and roof...anywhere else you are going to stay at Everest Base Camp is a tent. Wasn't really sure how to... More

I was originally hoping to stay in one of the various tent hotels erected along the road to the Main Base Camp. However, the tent hotels had already been taken down by the time we arrived in November. This left only two options: a modern-looking Chinese hotel and the venerable Rongbuk Monastery Guest House. I immediately settled on the latter... More

Fully agree with the other 'older' person who wrote a review - it would be awful if all the big chains started springing up. Who wants to get somewhere as wild and beautiful without feeling as though they'd suffered to earn it (having said that, we arrived by 4WD - hardly intrepid........). Yes, the place is basic, and I did... More

I note the other reviewers were young and rated this awful. I am 60 and found it fun and adventurous. Yes, you sleep on a board platform, the quilt is dirty and the cold, windy pit potty is an exercise in dexterity. We washed each other's hair by dipping cold water from the bucket, wore long johns as our 'sheets'... More

This is by far the best option compared to Mt. Everest Basecamp (tents). It is 5 minute drive away from tent-base camp, where you have to take bus (or walk) to farest base camp at 5200m. The rooms are square (about 4m x 4m) with 4 beds per room. Toilet-house is separate building (the smelling one's you find around everywhere... More

This place is exactly as everyone describes. We read these reviews before we went and knew what we were in for, and it was exactly as people have described. Bring your own food, as both my husband and i had terrible stomach problems in the night - not the best place to be ill - especially in the cold over... More

We travelled to Everest Base Camp with The Himalayan Roadrunners on Enfield 500 motorbikes which was an amazing expedition but not for the faint hearted. The Rongbuk monastery guest house was possibly one of the worst places I have ever stayed in. But Hey... you're at Everest... there aint no Sheraton Grands up here. You could stay in a tent... More
