Costa blu - Benitses

We have just returned form a late September holiday in Corfu staying at the Costa Blu. I found it difficult to find much info on this hotel – so I hope this report helps

We picked up an Internet special offer for rooms at 80 euros including breakfast and dinner. This was great value. Normal prices are considerably more. Most of the hotel is offered as suites. There are some rooms – which indeed were suites that have been split and adapted.
The hotel was very quiet – probably no more than 20% full and shortly due to close for the season.

This is promoted as a five star hotel. I don’t know how these ratings are arrived at – but our party – which included some well travelled people – agreed that the hotel was a very good standard – but would probably not match 5* star in Spain or Portugal.

General appearance and quality of the hotel is excellent. Rooms and suites are arranged into small blocks and run for about 80 metres the hillside. 3 or 4 storey high and each floor is stepped back from the one underneath.. Attractive shades of pastels also enhance the overall ambience. Plenty of flowers and shrubs. All external areas maintained to a high standard and kept spotless.
All rooms and general areas of the hotel have fantastic and uninterrupted views out across the bay and to mainland Greece.

Our room had entrance lobby – with wardrobe and fridge – with doors to bedroom and bathroom. Lots of space. Rooms were well finished. Well tiled. Excellent bed, linen, towels and curtains very good. Bathroom large. Bath with shower over – lots of hot water. TV – very limited English channels. CNN and SKY news. However there were usually one or two American films showing on the Greek channels (undubbed)
Only complaints were – no Tea/Coffee facilities. No mirror in bedroom. Only one bedside cabinet.

Balcony was large – but shared with room next door. Good quality table and chairs provided to each room. (There are private balconies to al the suites.)

Note - Some of the rooms have differing layouts and furnishings varied a bit (eg some had mirrors)

There is an excellent swimming pool. Fabulous water quality – with no discernible chlorine. Unfortunately not heated – but temperature was ok in late September. Comfortable sun beds provided, also lots of tables and chairs. Childs play area and separate pool. Good pool bar – and thoughtful music. No pool towels provided.

Dining room – well appointed – great views. Spotless kitchen and food display areas. Chef and serving staff very professional, attentive, friendly.
Food was very acceptable. Buffet selections were not enormous, compared to some larger hotels I have stayed in. But normally about 5 main courses available. Quality and freshness was excellent. Breakfast also very good. Wine prices about 10 euros bottle.

There is a bar –which I found a bit sterile, but again service was good. Also apparently a disco and gym – but not running when we were there.

Location. Hillside overlooking the bay. Fab views. The coast road is immediately below (20 metres) – there is some noise – but not a problem. The road has to be crossed to get to the beach. Beach is pebbles and difficult to swim from. Sun beds provided.

Aircraft do pass the hotel a little out to sea. A little noise – but none of our party found it to be an annoyance. In fact interesting to watch

About 800 metes from Benitses. Pleasant 10-minute walk Approx 15 k from Corfu Town, less from the airport. Quite an easy journey if you have a hire car. Taxis and buses available. If you do drive from the airport- follow the signs to Lefkimmi - as you will probably not see any for Benitses (despite what the car reps say)

Hotel is right hand turn 900 metres before Benitses town. It is signposted and there is a larger signpost for San Stefano Hotel that is on the same turn off.

Benitses village is fairly modest – a reasonable selection of restaurants and bars. Generally quiet – and conservative. Some picturesque parts in the small old town. The marina is currently being completed and no doubt this will add to the quality of the town. Corfu Town has great architecture, people, ambience and shops.

I recommend this hotel and would return – but if you want a decent beach then go elsewhere.

Just returned from Costa Blu hotel, just outside Benitses.
Here are my thoughts/opinions.

It's a newish hotel - 2 or 3 years old. Originally designed as a small number of "exclusive luxury suites" - many have now been divided into two small double rooms to make more money - we had one of these rooms - poor acoustics, you could hear conversations in adjacent room through the blocked up door. If you get one of these standard double rooms you will be sharing the veranda / terrace with the neighbouring room - certainly not "private" as described on their website.
The small double room we had was small and basic. Some rooms are better, bigger and with more features. We had TV but no phone, a shower room, two single beds - very dark and depressing as not much natural light in this particular room. Ask for a room on the top tier, try to get upgraded.
Good views from the top tiers but some ground level rooms the seaview is obscured by trees.
Rooms certainly not luxurious - ours was basic - I'd rate three star.
Mentions landscaped gardens - this is an overstatment. Though there are plenty of plants and trees, you can't exactly walk around within them as tghey are fenced off - mainly hard landscaping / concrete slabs in various colours to the areas you can access.
The sauna is a one person polyytunnel tent contraption fitted over a bed in a small room - you have to pay for it - I was expecting a standard sauna where you could go with partner or family.
Fitness centre is three machines.
Steam room, solarium, spa etc, are all small "wrap around" contraptions fitted on and over a bed, the same principle as the sauna - not as you would get in any gym membership facility here in UK. Didn't make it an attractive proposition. I don't know of anyone having used any of these facilities when we were there last week. I can't say I was surprised.
They mention wake up calls on the website - this is ok if you have a phone in your room and we didn't.
We didn't have a the coffee/tea maker mentioned, in our room either.
Be aware that September seems to be running down for the end of season.
Staff were attentive and friendly and the hotel was clean.
Nice around the pool, especially at night - good lighting.
They have their own small area of pebble beach which is ok.
The hotel is located next to a main road which can be noisy. They counter this by having piped music all day long around the pool and also piped in the direction of the beach so that you can hear it on the beach too, even over the sound of traffic - ok if you like their choice of pop/rock music - personally we found it very annoying.

We stayed half board - breakfasts were ok - all buffet, self service - cereals, bread, pastries, egg, bacon, sausage, fruit etc.
Dinner not quite so good. Admittedly it was a varied menu but if you arrived late, any dish involving a sauce would have formed a skin or be congealed as it had been sitting around in the "hostess" type trolleys for an hour or two. Typical menu would be - chicken curry, stifado, spaghetti, veg, salad - desserts maybe, creme caramel, fruit, small cakes.
There was mention of an a-la-carte restaurant - this was not operating when we were there - probably due to not having the minimum required guest numbers to break even.

Its location is good - a short walk to Benitses and a short bus ride to Corfu Town - buses run roughly every 1 hr 15 mins.
Walk out of the hotel and you can walk up to various small villages. well worth it.

Overall certainly not 5 star - more like 3 star.
Better not going half board and instead eating in Benitses - only five/ten minute walk away and quite a pleasant resort.

If you get a standard double room you will most likely be disappointed as these were formally suites now divided into small double rooms.
Staff were nice - no problems there, just a shame that hotel didn't live up to its description.

the hotel is very nice we had a big balacony with seaview and a view of mainland greece, the staff is really friendly and helpful, the main pool is really nice and big half of the week we had the pool to ourselves which was great, the dinner is not a buffet you get starter main and dessert but no choice, so i would reccomend to stay as bed and breakfast, we travelled with our son and the only dissapoinemt was the kids pool was empty without water because its not high season yet, and the kids park was quite dirty, only about a 10 min walk to the village where there is restaurants, souviner shops and supermarket, its a shame about the bad comments its a nice hotel overall

Having travelled extensively throughout Europe and beyond, we are able to say with some confidence that the Costa Blu is the worst hotel in which we have ever stayed. Those who gave the hotel a grading of 5 star must share some of the responsibility for the disappointment which .all guests experienced during our stay. The large balcony and view is not sufficient to give a hotel a 5 star rating. Our room was only cleaned once during our two week stay, non of the advertised facilities were available, not even a bar or lounge in which to sit during the evening.
The food offered was appalling, cold, poor choice, no variation, badly presented with very few staff to cater for our needs. The cost of our holiday was increased as we had to eat out in local restaurants which were excellent, they indicated that their business benefited greatly from the many disappointed Costa Blu guests who chose to eat out.
Holiday companies should remove this hotel from their sites.

Hi, my boyfriend and I have just returned from Costa Blu in Benitses, Corfu and felt that the previous reviews on this hotel did not give it enough credit, so wanted to give our positive feedback and helpful advice to others looking to book this hotel. Admittedly, everyone is different and we all have different expectations, but my boyf and I have been bitterly disappointed in the past with numerous 5* hotels around the Continent and can honestly say that the Costa Blu hotel was the best one yet! We went out there with an open mind, as we could not find alot of information on the hotel or the local fishing town of Benitses and have cone home as happy bunnies... we were very pleased. Our arrival was late at night and very welcoming, we were shown to our room, or should I say 'suite' in the pink building! I was chuffed with pink, boyf not quite so!! ; ) We couldn't believe our luck!! (After our holiday to Croatia being cancelled at the last minute by a 'disreputable' company, I could say alot worse, we were rather anxious that this would work out)! .......It did, in our favour. The room (307A), had a lounge with tv, sofa, coffee table, desk, large wardrobe and full length mirror with patio doors leading to the 25ft balcony with metal table and chairs and large umbrella. The bedroom had two queen size beds, two bedside cabinets, another tv, (rock and roll!), another wardrobe with safe, another large mirror and patio doors to balcony. We couldn't wait to see the view the next morning, but even by moonlight, the sea was as calm as a millpond! The bathroom was a good size with toilet, bidet, large sink, glass shelf and bath with shower hook... placed low, so could only really use whilst in bath. NB. Be careful of slipperly marble floors after male use of bathroom and lots of splashing! We dropped off cases and went straight to bar- Empty! So had a nice plate of cold meats, cheese, tomato and bread and a few glasses of red wine on the veranda to soak in the calm and serene atmosphere by candlelight! We were very happy. The following morning we couldn't wait to see the view, so as soon as the sun was up, so were we! WOW! What a view! You couldn't tell sea from sky. It was all so still and blue, quite stunning. (Our room was on the top floor, out of three floors, so I guess we had the best view with no trees etc). Photos don't really do it much justice. On clear days you can see across to the mainland Greece. Breakfast was of a good standard, usual buffet style display that you find in this sort of hotel, including either omelette (?), fried eggs, bacon, mini frankfurters, baked beans, cereals, fruits, cheese, ham, pastries, DIY toast, tea, coffee (take the milk with the ice)! And dilute the orange juice! Both milk and juice are strongly favoured in comparison to what we're used to England. This was the same format every morning, made me laugh though as the English were always the last into breakfast at 10.25am!! FYI the board basis we had was Half Board. Other meal time was Dinner. A very civilised affair with tables already made up. Drinks are offered by the ever helpful waiting staff, these you pay for. We had a bottle of wine with each meal and a bottle of still water and the drinks bill at the end of the week was reasonable, we thought. Nice Makedonikos red wine and rose, but didnt think much of the Apelier white. Buffet style again for dinner, with 4 options. One vegetarian, one fish and two meat. Chips and vegetables, usually green beans. Not a fab selection on veg, but they had salad options too. Bread to start with tzatiki and taramasolata. Would recommend the former of the two. Dessert was fruit, (melon, kiwi), bakvala style pastry, jelly, ice crem and cakes with icing and lots of colouriung! Watch those E numbers!!!.... I know Im going on a bit, but every little helps!! Anyway, moving on... the hotel was clean and tidy, the reception is spotless, bar was clean but no atmosphere, we didn't go back there again after the first evening. The pool bar was better, more people, great cocktails etc!! One evening, thery held the Greek Night with traditional dancing. Be warned, they say they will start at 8.30pm, but it was more like 9.30pm, after two of the dancers had finished 'making out' in their car, in full view of the pool bar residents!!! Very 'Dirty Dancing'!!! The evening was much fun, even the boyf got up and had a go! Very funny and enjoyable. Dancing wasn't brilliant but overall a good night. Have I mentioned that there are steps everywhere?? Not a winner for the less mobile or prams etc, but there is a lift in the main building between floors. Whilst we were there it was just couples staying, mainly English and German, I appreciate the children are back at school at this time, (mid-Sept), but felt that the couples-only thing was probably the standard clientele throughout the year, I may be wrong. The pool was large and clean, lots of sunbeds and tables and chairs and once again, overlooking the stunning sea views. We didn't venture to the in-house Gym (Errr.... we're on holiday)?! But the facilities were there and I guess those who really have to get their 'gym fix', would use it whatever...?! Great views from the running machines though?! ; ) So, onto Benitses. The local fishing town, 10 minute walk down the busy coastal road. (Yes, you can faintly hear the road from the hotel and rooms, but its not that bigger deal). You can walk along the beach or on the pavement by the road, we preferred the walk along the water. The town is made up of restaurants and bars and souvenir shops. There are a couple of supermarkets for the obligatory water (you can drink the water at the hotel, but we didn't, just in case..). A huge selection of Corfu memorabilia and t-shirts and lots of places to hire scooters and 4x4's ...if your'e brave enough and of course, cars too! We hired a jeep one day which was fab and toured around the island. Our favourite bar in Benitses was the Sunshine Bar, the interior was v. cool, modern with a funky woody edge (what do I sound like)?! Would appeal to younger adults or hip-oldies?! No offence to my elders intended! It has a calm, slightly romantic ambience, good lighting, probably some would call it a Chill-out bar with chill out music. Nice latte coffees and red wine and 'chilled out'! The restaurants were all very much the same along the strip of eateries and their food was all ok. Not amazing but not bad. Service was good and can recommend the Pasta alla Marinera from the Village Grill. Tony and Alex's joint was nice too, boyf enjoyed their Gyros and chips.....three times?!!! Public beach with beds and pedaloes to hire, large car park and nice harbour / marina, where you can watch the fishing boats come and go..... There is a small part of the beach back up by the Costa Blu hotel that is designated for hotel guests with sun beds, which is ok, but we walked further down where we could be totally alone for the best part of the day, apart from random passersby where we laid for hours and swam and snorkelled with the fishes. I had never snorkelled before, so was totally amazed. The experience for me, was awe-inspiring, I felt like I was in 'Finding Nemo'! The sea was calm and still and you can float for hours?! Very peaceful. But yes, there is always that coastal road. After a while, we just got used to it and ignored it. Due to the time of year we were visiting, we encounted some rain, quite heavy rain and thunderstorms on the last few days but this meant we could go and explore Corfu town, Kerkyra and its old town. We thought its architecture was very much like Dubrovnik but larger. Good shops, great for shoes, (yippee)! Handbags and clothes for men and women, souvenir shops and chocolate shops etc, they even have a Marks & Spencer's and Laura Ashley!!.. random. But all in all a great selection and quite up and coming. We used the local bus No.6 Blue bus to and from the town centre which is 1 Euro each way, per person. Whereas a taxi will cost you about 20 Euros. Bus can get quite busy with locals and tourists so be warned you may have to stand and the road is very twisty turny. The bus may not even stop at designated bus stops if too busy / packed already. Corfu town obviously had a much much larger selection of very nice restaurants... it struck us as quite a young city with lots of young families and people enjoying their busy and friendly nightlife, very civilised. I guess if you want clubs you go to Kavos or the like. This place is far more ....'chic', actually. Well, you'll be pleased to know Im coming to an end. Boyf is, I need to start unpacking and washing : ( Back to reality then?! So, all in all, I would be very happy to personally recommend the Costa Blu hotel, the hotel and location is favourable. One of the best resorts on then island if you're looking for a chilled out holiday, with stunning scenery all around, sea and hills alike. You can keep yourself busy or do nothing, and still have a great time. If you go, I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did and that you find this review helpful. I didn't want to oversell the hotel, but just felt that after numerous other disappointing holidays, that it would be beneficial to all, to be able to write something positive for once.

Best regards and thanks to all at Costa Blu.

Love Z & R x

I booked this hotel on the understanding that it was a 5 star, but it is barely a 4 star.We arrived at the hotel around 2pm in the afternoon and we were greeted by Cheerful receptionist who made us feel so comfortable. They also helped us to carry our suitcases to our room. They was confusion on our rooms when we booked but it was sorted so quickly.
The accommodation was fine, there were no tea or coffee making facilities.I asked for a kettle to boil make baby milk and to boil water to clean baby bottles but was refused because of healthy and safety rules.I end up washing baby bottles in the toilet.
The showers were totally inadequate in that they were waist height so you had to hold the nozzle in order to have a shower. Housekeeping was also not always up to scratch. The beds and towels were changed everyday. surfaces were hardly cleaned.dirty glasses were never washed or changed.
On food
We were on Full Board
Breakfast was totally inadequate. It was same same everyday. This usually consisted of dried up cheese and ham, grilled tomatoes, eggs of some sort - usually hard boiled or pre-cooked giant omelette. The tea bags consisted of mainly tasteless dust and to make matters worse, the hot water in the urn was never hot enough to make a decent drink. We end up drinking Coffee everyday. The last 2 days of our holiday. They was not enough breakfast for everyone as the place was getting busy. The poor girls in the kitchen could not cope. They were sweating running around.
The dinner was very disappointing from the 1st day to the last day. They was not a lot of choices and No food choices for kids. For 10 days we were there we only had chips 2 times.Very disappointing at dinner as they do not provide any drinks even water in jugs. You have to purchase your own water or drinks. For 2 dinners we ate Benitses which is 10 mins walk from the hotel. there are some lovely restaurants and lovely food.
POOL
The Pool Bar staff were very lovely,The pool area itself was ok.Music at the Pool was very old fashioned.they seem to have had only 2CDs from the 80s.After 2days i have had enough of that music.Kids pool was mentioned on the advert but they was No kids pool.It was a let down as we had 2&3 year olds who were looking forward to use the Pool, The kids were so bored especially the 10&11 yr olds could not wait to come back home as they was nothing for them to do and they was no entertaiment. My son could not even kick football as they is no place to do it.This hotel is more suitable for couples than Families. The Beach was said to be next to the hotel but actually it is Across the road down some steps and the last step to the beach is half metre drop. The Beach is very stoney and it was full of Seaweed and No sand at all but the water was very clear.
The Wi-Fi only works on the Reception , Pool Bar and at the Beach.
The main bar was always closed so you could not get or order a drink.
This hotel is on a Hill so if you are a wheelchair user , have Bad knees or have a Pram/Pushchair this place is not for you.
Would We go back ..Big NO NO.

Positive: great views and thats about it.
Negative: understaffed with terrible attitude. Food is probably the worst ever. NO internet, no coffe kettle, TVs from the 70's to match rhe rest of the furnishings.
Beds so bad we might as well have slept on the floor.
No privacy on balcony. Electricity disappeared at night making us wake up drenched in sweat.
The town itself is a joke. Probably the worst, boring touristrap in history.
Conclusion: we were booked for a week and left in disgust after 2 days to find a better place.
