If you are birders, take an early morning walk up the hill towards the canopy zipline places - we saw our best birds there - 3 species of Toucans, Woodpeckers, Barbets etc. The best birding in Mindo is along that road. If you are looking for a good, inexpensive hostal to base yourself in Mindo, Biohostal is a great option. And go to El Chef and have the Trout - Delicious!! " More >

The grounds are beautiful, with some small ponds and trails, and the location is nice--not too long of a walk out of town and v..."ery peaceful at night. The food at La Roulotte is excellent and the staff certainly make sure there's plenty to go around. In general, all the people who work there are incredibly friendly and helpful, and didn't have a problem with my mostly-butchered Spanish. Around the dining room, it is possible to see a multitude of birds (especially hummingbirds, of course), frogs, squirrels, and other wildlife, and Ignacio, the owner, is more than happy to help guests find interesting species.   "El Monte Lodge is across the Mindo river from this hiker-destination town in the cloud forest roughly 2 hours in the mtns. Northeast of Quito -- one arrives swinging over the rushing glacial river on a wooden bosun's chair rigged to a rope pulley. The owners, an American and his Ecuadoran wife, who ..."I believe is part Huarani (an indigenous tribe), built the whole place. She as the main designer of both the log lodge and A-frame wooden cottages by the river and in the forest. The lodge is a high-arched thatched A-frame with open sides, an open-air grill and kitchen, comfortable sofas and chairs round a horno-type fireplace and library tables. Polished wood floors mean guests leave their shoes on the short stairs rising to the lodge platform. Food is served family style and is largely local produce, fruit and fish, much from their own garden; no alcohol is served so BYO if you want an evening glass of wine or spirits.
