This was a special treat dinner to ourselves and it didn't disappoint! The location is unassuming, the interior is understated but the food and the experience were spectacular. We sat at the counter, a good choice to see the level of precision in the plating...and the skill in creating the sushi. Amazing staff who took time to carefully explain each serving but were equally unobtrusive as we enjoyed the evening. Yes, it's eye-waveringly expensive but it's definitely a special occasion destination.More

The absolutely amazing Omakase dinner I had tonight reflects a huge mistake on my part...….but in a positive, good way! The mistake?.....My not paying this iconic culinary temple a much earlier revisit to savour its superb cuisine! For me, tonight’s feast must rank as one...of the top three most memorable and enjoyable meals I have had in the GTA…..in recent memory, if not all time! Yes! It was indeed THAT GOOD!! Food quality and quantity, deliciousness, service, ambience and price point! Every one of these elements was near flawless! Beginning with the three, beautifully presented and plated Otsumami. Their heavenly taste, featuring perfectly cooked and precisely dressed and seasoned major ingredients, all coalesced to form some balanced and amazingly delectable flavour profile and wonderful texture delicacies. The umami rich Wanmono of Cold Soba with Sakura shrimp was refreshing and delightfully different as a mid-course dish. The tasty broth! Wow!! Sashimi platter of Scottish Wild Ocean Trout, Chu-toro Bluefin Tuna and Madai from Japanese water were all pristine and fresh. Neta ingredients used for the whopping 15 pieces of Edomae nigiri sushi were surprisingly varied, wonderfully exotic and gorgeously dressed with delicious house-made glaze and sauces. In most cases, no soya-sauce was required……though Kaji’s dashi infused home brewed soy-sauce was top-notched and rare by GTA standard! The Neta and the 15 Nigiri pieces featured the following: Hokkaido Uni ( Sea-Urchin ), Baby Sakura-ebi with Caviar ), Anago ( Sea-Eel ), Akami ( lean Bluefin Tuna ), Chu-Toro ( Medium fatty Tuna ), O-Toro ( Fatty tuna belly ), Shin-Ika ( Juvenile Cuttlefish ), Scottish Wild Ocean Trout, Hirame ( Flounder ), Madai ( Japanese Sea bream ), Yellow-eyed Snapper, Chopped tuna roll with spicy mayo, Aburi Hotate ( Flame torched Hokkaido Scallops ), Awabi ( Abalone ), Botan-Ebi, Tako ( Octopus ). Every one of the above was a star in its own right! The brightest being the stellar Hokkaido Uni ( creamy and sweet ), the Awabi ( so tender, rich and flavorful, the liver sauce! Wow! ), the Aburi Scallops ( multiple layers of complexed profiles, from smokey aroma to caramelized sweetness. Soooo good! )......and of course, ALL the fishes, mostly from Japanese water!! BTW, even the once sub-pared Shari has improved and is now more than passable! Dessert of fresh fruits and ice-cream, though simple, was interesting and enjoyable, the ultra-chewy mochi pieces a delight to eat. All-in-all, a superlative meal that was mindbogglingly filling and great in terms of both quality and value-for-money! I cannot stop but think and wonder why someone would actually pay over double the price for Omakase to eat at certain places midtown or even four times the price for Omakase, downtown…….unless they would like to pay for gimmicks and/or subsidise the decor and rent of those establishments! Trust me!......listen to Yu-San and go to Sushi kaji and trust Kaji-San for his Omakase!More

This is by far the best sushi restaurant in Toronto. So fresh that the fish literally melts in your mouth. Also loved sitting at the counter and watching the chefs work. Almost like watching a ballet the way they moved their hands and put the...pieces together. Dinner and a show in one! You get what you pay for and this place is really great. You will not be disappointed.More

The presentation is amazing, the staff is very very friendly and kind, I enjoyed the first couple dishes (this was a set menu) the last few I wasn’t too big on, with that being said I’m not crazy about sashimi) and I’ve never eaten real...authentic sushi/sashimi like this before this visit and I’m not a big fish eater so that may just be me. I do think that it is pricey though although it is quite a bit of food included in the set menu. I would go back, but now I know a little more and what I wouldn’t eat again lol!More

My all time favourite sushi restaurant in Toronto. Pricey?...yes! Worth it?...definitely. What gives it 5 stars for me...the simplicity and tradition combined with a hint of innovation in the dishes they produce. The sashimi and sushi are also very fresh. It might seem like the...portions look small, but the full course meal had us satisfied and feeling full.More

I have been to Sushi Kaji numerous times over the years and, following our family custom of the birthday celebrant choosing a place for a date-night out, I picked Kaji. There are times I have strayed to other top-end Omakase, or chef's choice, sushi restaurants...and some are more expensive and some a very good but no one will ever top Kaji-san for his devotion to fresher than fresh fish, from Japan and other places, with preparation right out in the open behind the sushi bar, each slice cut to order. When you bite into each Sushi or Sashimi presentation, it's a revelation, how can this fish be so soft and beautiful, almost melting on your tongue with deep tastes of the sea, with all the other ordinary sushi so bland and relatively tasteless? Even the rice is something special. There are three levels of dining, with the difference being lobster or Wagyu are added to the next levels beyond the first. A menu of unusual sakes also compliments the dining experience so don't fail to ask which one might be recommended. I just love Kaji Sushi and will be returning as long as the chef carries on, birthday after birthday. It is a bit out of the way and make sure you park on the street not in the lot next to the place, as it's not part of the restaurant and can be chained at night while you are dining! But as the Michelin Guide will say, 'it's worth a detour.More

We have been to Sushi Kaji twice now. Both times have been very memorable experiences. The menu is a tasting menu with three different price levels depending on the main entree and whether or not you choose to include the wagyu beef. The menu starts...with a series of appetizers and a small sashimi bowl and a main cooked entree. We tried both the sea bream and curried lobster options. This is then followed by a series of different sushi in rapid succession until the end of the tasting course. A dessert then follows. The quality of the fish used is outstanding and clearly not the typical fish you get at regular Japanese restaurants. We enjoyed every single sushi presented to us (mackerel, trout, octopus, blue fin tuna, tuna belly, eel, shrimp, snow crab). The way they garnish each different sushi with yuzu and assorted other herbs/garnishes really compliment the high quality seafood that they curate. Lastly the dessert is no slouch. We had a Yuzu based sherbet that had just the right amount of sweetness and a three layered cake (green tea, red bean, and chocolate). Sitting at the counter and watching Chef Kaji work meticulously in making the sushi is the way to go. it’s almost hypnotic to watch his hands work. The other two assistant chefs that flank him are equally efficient and professional. The entire operation is slick and fun to watch. You are also told whether or not to dip your particular sushi in soy sauce. The wasabi used is real wasabi and tastes much smoother than the usual horseradish based wasabi that you get at regular Jap places. We love this place. It is deserving of a higher ranking on TripAdvisor. We will be back next year.More

Our meal was an exciting visual experience as well as the authentic taste of fresh sashimi, fusion, and a variety of delightful sushi from imported seafood. The restaurant only opens from Wednesday to Sunday with a full house of guest.

I went here for dinner with my husband in January for my birthday. I ordered the Waza and my husband had the Takumi. The food was delicious and fresh. I thought I was going to be hungry since the portions are small, but surprisingly we...were quite full. The only thing I would suggest is better dessert. Otherwise, all of the dishes were of high quality and tasted great. Chef Kaji was entertaining to watch. He's so focused! This wouldn't be a place I would go to all the time, since it was a little under $500 for the 2 of us, but it is a nice place to have a very special dinner.More

I went with my husband for my birthday tonight, and my husband made it clear when we made our reservation that I have celiac. I absolutely cannot have any gluten. The restaurant said no problem. We also verified that they understood my food restriction when...we arrive. We had a lovely meal until dessert arrived - ice cream with fruit and red bean. I had a couple bites and then the waitress ran over apologizing saying that the dessert has gluten. Someone else then came and said it doesn’t have gluten. Then the person came back saying the fruit has gluten and then they corrected themselves again and said the red bean has gluten. It was a total mess. Regardless of which part had gluten, some of it definitely did because I’m horribly sick. The restaurant apologized, but clearly didn’t care enough to do anything about their mistake on our bill. We paid $450 and walked away with me sick enough that my weekend (and birthday) have been ruined and I’m likely going to miss at least a few days of work. AVOID!!More

Visited Sushi Kaji in January 2019. This is an authentic Japanese restaurant, not too far from YYZ airport. If you are near the airport and have craving for Japanese, this is a good option. Sat at sushi bar for omakase. A lot appetizers before sushi....By the time sushi started to come, I was already full. Be sure to bring good appetite. Atmosphere is casual, although pricing is fine dining.More
