Description: Chez Panisse opened its doors in 1971, started by Alice Waters and a band of idealistic friends. A neighborhood bistro named after a character in Marcel Pagnol's 1930's trilogy of movies (‘Marius,’ ‘Fanny,’ and ‘Cesar’), the Restaurant and Café are a homage to the sentiment, comedy and informality of these classic films. From the beginning, Alice and her partners tried to do things the way they would like them done at a dinner party at home. Through the years, Chez Panisse has stayed true to this original inspiration and is now part of the global Slow Food movement. Chez Panisse Restaurant, located downstairs, is open for dinner Monday through Saturday, by reservation only. The set menu changes every night, reflecting the season. Our produce, meat, poultry, and fish come from farms, ranches, and fisheries guided by principles of sustainability.

What is there more to say about this beautiful place? I could write a very lengthy post here, because we are long time customers. Elegant, yet not stuffy. Dishes are so beautifully made and composed. Wine pairing are always spot on and highly recommended. My last dinner there was for my 50th birthday, and I had the special treat to... More

If you go to the Bay Area, this place is as classic as the golden gate. Very good food with excellent service. It is quite pricey, $300 for 2 people is normal and the menu changes daily so make sure you approve of the menu options. Everything is organic, locally grown and fresh! That is starting to become a trend... More

It was terrible to hear the news about Chez Panisse, Berkeley’s beloved institution, having to close its doors last month due to fire. Hopefully all will be repaired by June or late May, the reports say. My friends, colleagues, and I, have spent many a meal and countless hours chatting the nights and early afternoons away in the upstairs café.... More

I enjoyed their oven baked pizza for lunch. I liked the crust and it was very tasty. We had great service by friendly, knowledgeable and profesional staff. I loved the decor. I'm sorry about their fire. I look forwards to going next for dinner when Alice Waters reopens.

Great ambience, service, food, location! Alice Waters & her staff invented CA cuisine - fresh, seasonal ingredients presented beautifully in appropriate portions. Everyone should experience Chez Panisse!

We love the history of this place and its location. The service, ambiance, and food continue to be very special and a great restaurant to return to when you are in Berkeley. Occasionally some very loud nearby tables are a distraction. But just the luck of the draw.

Our two visits to the legendary Chez Panisse have both been to the upstairs Cafe for lunch, never for the more elaborate, elegant and expensive dinners downstairs. But both experiences have been lovely. Reservations are easily made for the Cafe, the atmosphere is relaxed and congenial, and the food wonderful. An early indicator of quality is always the salad, and... More

Prices are reasonable for what you get. It's the place I'd choose when I want to have elegant dining with a friend, just as long as we don't have too much to talk about -- it's a bit noisy.

I have gone to both the main restaurant an the cafe many years ago, and what a wonderful experience to return and see that little has changed. Same simple but comfortable decor; warm greeting, and of course, fresh, excellently prepared food. This is not the place to go for fireworks - it's more about how to use high quality ingredients,...
