Stopped there for a lunch while in Essex. It's an old place with a lot of historical artifacts - lots to see inside. The food was quite average, but inexpensive - not much to say about it.
It was just my husband and I for Thanksgiving this year, so we decided to go out. Pretty day for a drive and then a leisurely buffet Thanksgiving meal. Thoughtfully and carefully prepared traditional meal with a few epicurean twists. Yummy! Great service and smiles. My husband enjoyed hot buttered rum to warm him before dinner. The only disappointment was... More
We went to the Griswold for their Thanksgiving Buffet. We were seated at a nice table for two.We were made comfortable by staff and did not feel any rush. Three salads were offered-fresh green salad with cranberries and blue cheese for toppings, a three bean salad made with not the usual canned three beans, and an orzo salad with olives.... More
Over the years the 'Gris' has been a mainstay in our dining choices. Mostly for their Hunt Brunch, which is fantastic. Last night we joined a group of friends at the new Wine Bar. Very nice. They have a great selection of tapas type dishes that are perfect to go along with an evening of wine tasting. Their wine flights... More
Essex CT is a very cute town on the Connecticut River, and the Griswold is the oldest inn in Essex. We had a late lunch on a Sunday in the bar area. The food was excellent, but the service was a bit slow due to many people having lunch. But more time to enjoy the excellent beer!
This was the second time my husband and I went to the Griswold Inn for dinner. I wanted to go back because (besides the modern electricity and such) it is like stepping back into a simpler age. The restaurant is stocked with paintings of old ships as well as ship memorabilia. Nothing is overdone, not the food or the furnishings.... More
In my various visits to Essex, I've always had delicious meals at the Griswold Inn. There's nothing stylish or trendy here -- mostly the same foods you find in the average New England restaurant -- but they are prepared well and are very tasty. On our visit last week, we had the fish and chips platter, the club sandwich platter,... More
THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE BAR, not food or the Inn. If you are in the area, you must stop by to check this place out and have a drink. This place oozes history. You can't help but wander who else has ate/drank here. They have an awesome display of antique guns and memorabilia dating back several centuries. We... More
The best thing about dining at the Griswold Inn is the charming, historic atmosphere regardless whether you are in the dining room areas, or the Tap Room bar area. The nautical theme is really fun and all the prints of various sailing vessels on the walls were enjoyable to look at while dining. We chose to eat in the Tap... More
Every aspect was great -- food, service, and ambiance. Clams for appetizers, soup, swordfish, shrimps-- all well-prepared and served hot and timely.
