Layover in Zurich

Hi, I am planning a trip to Italy in Sept. and am looking at a flight that starts in NY (JFK) on American Airlines and once i am at the ZRH airport I have to change airlines to AirBerlin to finish my flight to Florence Italy. There is a 3 hour layover. Is that enough time for me to get my luggage from luggage claim, then go through customs, then go to a different terminal get boarding pass then go through security? Thanks

Sorry but I have a correction to the above I have another layover in Dusseldorf (DUS airport) after my Zurich layover which is 1hr 35min. This flight remains on AirBerlin Airlines. Would I have to pick up my luggage again and go through customs before getting my boarding pass? and is the 1hr 35min layover enough time too. thanks.

If you are travelling on one ticket, your luggage will be checked through to Florence, and you will collect it and take it through Customs there. Customs formalities in Italy usually consist of walking through a doorway labelled "Nothing to declare". You should get all three boarding passes at JFK.

You will have to go through Immigration (Passport Control) at the point where you enter the European Schengen area, which is Zurich. In my experience, the airport is quite efficient, and three hours should be plenty of time.

There will be no Immigration or Customs at Dusseldorf.

I would think that you could find a much better routing than that. You're about tripling your connection time by flying the opposite direction to Dusseldorf then back down to Florence. I would broaden your search to find something a bit more convenient.

To your specific question, as noted, assuming you're on a single ticket with AA and its partner Air Berlin, your baggage will go all the way to Florence.

Good luck.

Thanks the only reason I am looking at that route is because I am using my frequent flier miles and I have limited choices. Thanks for the info though.

Instead of flying to Florence have you looked at flying to Pisa? There are often more connections to Pisa and this may mean one less connection. It's an easy train ride to Florence.

Just a thought.
