don't take the train (!) it takes forever!

Take the bus to Salerno train staion and then transfer to the bus to Avellino - much, much quicker and an easy option. (or there are also car rental companies in Salerno if you want to explore - Salerno to Avellino is a fairly easy drive and takes about 40 minutes)

If you go to the SITA site, there is a bus line that is Avellino-Salerno-Avellino and you will see they are rather frequent...you need to allow a bit over an hour each way.

p.s. there's a new Avellino Forum on TA ;-) you can post Avellino related questions there and they may not get "lost" in the Positano Forum threads

dear dsanta53,

Defnitely as both amalfilove1 and SouthernItaly mentioned, the SITA bus from Salerno to Avellino would be faster than taking a regional train. It'd be best to plan the trip Mon-Sat (except holidays) when more SITA buses run:

Ferry from Amalfi to Salerno Porto Turistico

http://www.coopsantandrea.com/it/servizidilinea/servizi_b.asp?id=2

SITA bus from Amalfi to Salerno (get off at last stop at Via Vinciprova)

SITA bus to Avellino (get on at Via Vinciprova)

If you take the ferry, you could catch the SITA bus to Avellino from the SITA bus stop on Corso Garibaldi just left of the black, orange, and white "SNAIDERO" sign. You can walk up the pier, head straight across the parking lot (Piazza della Concordia), cross the busy street, walk along the street next to another parking lot, cross the busy street (could head left to cross the busy street/Corso Garibaldi at the stoplight), then head to the left of the two SITA bus stops(ocean at your back) which are separated by a small alleyway/street(rightmost SITA bus stop under the "SNAIDERO" sign. You'll see the bus schedule for the SITA bus to Avellino posted on the leftmost SITA bus stop.

I think a ticket to Avellino from Amalfi would take perhaps an E6 ticket (€3.50); you could just tell the tobacconist or person selling you the ticket in Amalfi, "Avellino" to be sold the proper ticket, and you could use the same ticket for both SITA bus rides (Amalfi-Salerno/Salerno-Avellino). If you plan to take the ferry to Salerno, there's a bar just right of the two SITA bus stops where you can buy a ticket to Avellino.

Having a car would be extremely convenient to reach your father's village because sometimes buses pass infrequently or sometimes not at all. As amalfilove1 mentioned, the drive from Salerno to Avellino is especially easy once you reach the autostrada.

The SITA bus will drop you off at the main bus depot in Avellino (Piazza Kennedy) where you can even take an AIR bus to perhaps your father's village. You can see if your father's town is a stop on one of the AIR bus lines:

http://ro.autobus.it/ro/asp/ricercaorari.asp?user=air

There's an office off to the side of the bus depot/Piazza Kennedy where you can buy bus tickets for any AIR buses. You might buy a couple for a roundtrip as sometimes businesses/tobacconists close up for lunch (until 4pm) in smaller towns.

By the ways, here's the link for the new Avellino forum as SouthernItaly mentioned:

Buona Fortuna...
