After the first part of our excursion at Boatswain’s Beach Adventure and Turtle Farm, we walked across the street to the Dolphin Discovery Centre for the second part of our excursion.
My partner I lined up in the shallow pool with ten to twelve others from our cruise as well as the Celebrity Cruise line that was docked that day, in our swim suits and life jackets and watched as Darwin, the dolphin performed several tricks for us.
We took turns holding a volleyball for Darwin to touch, shaking hands with him, dancing with him and even sharing a kiss on the cheek. We swam from one side of the pool to the other and held our hands up in a row as the trainer signaled for Darwin to jump up out of the water, splashing us. I also learned a valuable lesson swimming from one side of the pool to the other: unless it’s absolutely necessary, DO NOT dunk your head underwater and attempt to blow bubbles in saltwater. It’s absolutely disgusting.
Darwin danced on his tail across the length of the pool for us while one of the facility’s resident photographers snapped photos. If there was one drawback, it was the fact that every interaction I had with Darwin was an opportunity for someone else to snap a photo. I wouldn’t have minded as much if we had been allowed to bring our own cameras, but the centre didn’t allow it.
After our time with Darwin had come to an end, far too soon for my liking, we were ushered into a smaller saltwater pool with two other trainers. I held a starfish in my hand, gently touching the rough surface and also ran my hands across a stingray that the trainers held in their hands. If you’ve never touched a stingray, its skin is smooth yet slippery, with a gel-like consistency.
It was a positive experience overall, although I wasn’t happy with the inability to take my own photos and the price of the photos that the facility’s photographers took of us were far too expensive for what they were.
However, I did enjoy spending time with Darwin and I’d love to go on another dolphin excursion next time I’m in the Caribbean!
