We finally got some time off from work and booked this ryokan. We were very excited for our trip to Kurokawa but unfortunately, the ryokan made a mistake and booked us for only for one night and not two nights as discussed.
On our first day there, there was no confirmation as to how long we would be staying. In fact, since we were travelling, we arrived late at the ryokan and received a rude call from one of the guys working there asking us when we will arrive as they need to prepare the meal. I was a bit taken aback but did not think much of it at this point.
After the first night, I first got a rude call from the front desk telling me that I was 30 minutes late for my checkout time and when I expressed my surprise that I was booked for two nights instead of one - the reaction was very surprising. This was especially surprising considering that they claim to be a top ryokan (charging 80,000 yen a night (40,000 a person)). They simply noted nonchanlantly that this was not their problem and we were only booked for one night and there's nothing they could do about it. Only when I complained how ridiculous their attitude was did they start to try to work with us to try to find other options. Please note however, they kept blaming us and telling us it was our fault and in fact the reservation was only made for one day. They even made it sound like we had an issue understanding because we were "gaijin" or foreigners. This is entirely not true as I grew up in Japan and am a native speaker of Japanese.
The bottom line is they basically kicked us out noting that they have only booked us for one night and not two. They failed to find any alternative options for us and since this was a long weekend we could not find any other place to stay in the Kurokawa area and had to drive all the way to Beppu to find alternative accomodations ourselves.
I strongly believe that this type of "I don't really care" attitude (i.e. it's your problem attitude) in any hotel type accomodation never deserves a top rating. I have been to many hotels and ryokans but I have never experienced this type of rude attitude before.
To be fair, the room was nice but the food was mediocre compared to many other nicer ryokans I have stayed at. It's definitely not worth JPY80,000 a night. There are so many other more reasonable options in Kurokawa - please do not make the same mistake I did and stay here. Due to the carelessness of the staff at this ryokan, our trip to Kurokawa was ruined -- because the staff basically kicked us out, we had to spend the most of the second day looking for alternative options.
