Needing a stopover for a long journey and after reading a recommendaton in the current Rough Guide ( but unfortunately not able to check on Tripadvisor),we chanced upon La Poularde .
Rough Guide (2009) advised that the Poularde "has some lovely rooms and the restaurant is excellent" . this might possibly have been accurate in 1992 ,given the style and presentaton of both room and meal but is now wholly misleading.
The room lacked any charm or comfort, the toilet roll dispenser appeared to have been relocated from a service station restroom while the towels were so threadbare they were transparent . Musty smelling pillows, stained chairs ,and sachets of liquid soap all screamed of an establishment that had given up long ago.
We optimistically hoped that the food would be the redeeming feature ..how naive . cow foot pate with no seasoning, overcooked cured pig lump ,floating in a jus of powdered gravy and an excruciating caramel on sugar crust tart. It was a school dinner performance with presentation inspired by Fanny Craddock .
To top it all the service was at the speed of light . ..with no time to pause before our plates were whipped away and the next course appeared .Clearly it was not intended that we ponder to long on exactly what we might be eating...this happened in the early hours of the morning as i lay sweating and praying that my system would manage to digest what I had subjected it to..
To add insult to injury they also attempted to overcharge us...Under no circumstances would I vist this establishment again and nor will I ever trust a Rough Guide recommentation !
