The Chachagua hotel is a unique experience. Located in a remote spot it has grounds with a river running through it and is surrounded by farms.

The highlight of our stay was meeting David, the tour guide. He was the nicest, most enthusiastic and caring young man, who went out of his way to make our stay the best it could be. Tours with him are amazing because he has eagle eyes and sees all sorts of animals you would never see on your own. We got to see a sloth high up in a tree. David made an Eagle call, and the sloth kept moving around, which was a wonder to see. He is extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife and environment, and he has an amazing way with animals. You can tell he loves his job, and that he loves helping people. I cannot say enough about him.

The restaurant and cleaning staff are also really nice and helpful. We arrived very late at night and were met by Henri, the night watchman, who could not have been friendlier. Fernando, the receptionist was also a sweetie, though he was new and had not been completely trained.

The only exception to the greats staff was the manager, who seemed to take very little interest in the guests. She never asked us about our trip, or how the stay was going. When we contacted her prior to our trip, she only answered one question per email, so we had to keep sending emails to find things out. For example, we had to keep asking how to get to the hotel, since she kept telling us we could rent a car, and we were coming in too late to do so. She seemed completely disinterested even when she was around.

The hotel is nice and has a great space for playing games if you come with family, and there is a lot to explore there. The hike on the property is wonderful. There are places, like the pool, that look a bit run down. The amenities are minimal, and even the amenities that should be there like umbrellas, or flashlights to get to your room, are no longer available, since they have been taken or lost by guests and have not been replaced. This is not a new problem for hotels, and umbrellas, especially, are needed. It seems like the hotel management does not care to provide them. The map of the hotel grounds is terrible, and the paper with information about hotel rules and hours, is a bit negative. They make sure you know you will be expected to pay for anything you take, and it feels like they are nickel and dining you without providing any luxuries.

We were expecting the hotel to have a lot more information and materials about available tours, but we had to do a lot of research ourselves. David was really helpful with this, but there was no printed material to go through.

The rooms: My friend and I stayed in a Bungalow. The room was spotless and every day the towels are arranged in the shape of an animal, which was really charming.

The bathroom is nice, but the floor has wooden planks with space in between, so you can see the dirt floor underneath. The open spacing on the floor means that bugs do get in, though we did not have a big bug problem. Another nice touch, was that the light to our front steps was turned on every night before we got in.

The bungalows have no air conditioning, which I did not mind at all, but be aware that NOTHING DRIES. That includes bathing suits. The lLAUNDRY SERVICE at the hotel is REALLY expensive - $3 per pair of underwear, $4 or 5 for a shirt etc., and just getting your clothes dried seems to be the same price. We ended up taking our clothes to the launder mat in town, which cost $3/k. The hotel really needs a coin operated dryer for guest to use.

Be aware when packing that it will be difficult to wear things that have gotten wet more than once, or until you can get them to a dryer. I also wish I had packed more than one warm sweater - it is chillier in the mornings than I had thought it would be.

The location, transportation and car rental:
The hotel is pretty remote. It is 30 minutes from La Fortuna, and a taxi ride costs $30 each way. The hotel does not provide any kind of transportation into town, which surprised me.
It is 3 hours from San Jose. Our flight got in very late and we did not want to drive on foreign roads at night, so we found out you can get a van from Desafio to pick you up and take you to the hotel for $155 for up to 6 people. The hotel can arrange it for you, though it took us some
The paved roads are in good condition, since the previous President made it a priority, so that things may have changed since many previous reviews. However, the signage is TERRIBLE. The road to the Chachagua is 2 km of dirt and rock, and requires careful going.

If you plan to stay there you can rent a car in La Fortuna. We rented from Alamo. Do not rent directly from the store in town. When we called for 4 day rental we were quoted $500 and something. When we rented it from rentacar.com we got $228. Be aware that you can only rent a car online from the car rental sites 48 hours ahead of your desired pick up date. The only way we found to rent online at the last minute was reantacar..com.
A regular front wheel drive sedan will get you anywhere you want to go, including to the hotel, but be aware that it might things easier to get a car that sits higher up off the ground. The cars available to rent will dent if you breath of=n them the wrong way, so be super careful with them. Also be aware that rocks popping up from the dirt roads could scratch the car pretty easily.

Tours at the hotel:
We took the horse back riding tour with David. He is really good with the horses, and even the most inexperienced horse back rider will have no problem. There is a small treck down to a waterfall, which was wonderful, and where David pointed out the most interesting things to see.

All around it was a great experience.

Staying at the Chachagua Rainforest hotel was one of the best experiences of my life. It is a place you have to see and experience for yourself!! The staff was the friendliest I've ever met over all of my travels and hotel stays. David was one of the most caring and helpful person I've ever met. Everyone there was helpful and sweet and charming. The hotel itself is nestled into the rainforest and it is surreal. It is very beautiful and the most amazing wildlife and nature I saw was right on the property itself. The restaurant was clean and the food was delicious! Everyone there was always concerned about my well being and making sure I was fed even when I got up earlier than the restaurant was open. They were extremely accommodating. I can't say enough kind things about the people and the place it was truly beyond words!! An unforgettable adventure that I will never forget. I love Chachagua and I've never been so sad to leave a place. I can't wait to go back!! Simply stated "WOW" !! Incredible!!

Room tip: All of the rooms are fantastic! You can't go wrong!

Chachagua found me through a Living Social invitation. On a whim, I purchased a 7 night stay. it has been a magical Costa Rican immersion vacation. Not touristy at all. The staff here have become my new friends, the accommodations charming, allowing for whatever I am in the mood: hikes, nature tours, night life in the town of Fortuna, and relaxing on my comfortable deck of my bungalow reading. As a single woman traveling, I feel safe and comfortable here. My nature guide, David, has been great with recommendations of activities and his knowledge of animals and plants. This is truly a special place and one I would recommend to anyone who wants to get away from it all, yet still have the basic comforts of electricity, WiFi and potable running water.

Every morning the housekeeper surprises me with a folded towel creation. The restaurant is simple and good. Everything is very clean. I am looking forward to the remainder of my stay, horseback riding, birdwatching, swimming, The background noise is loud of rushing water, rain, birds, frogs, insects and lulls me to sleep every night.

We received great service at this beautiful rainforest retreat. Cottages are very clean and nicely decorated. Service from reception and restaurant was caring and very considerate/ concerned about meeting our needs. I would recommend for couples or families looking for a unique and remote rainforest experience near La Fortuna.
