I picked up this trip on a last minute deal. I had read the reviews and they were very mixed. I found a lot of the bad reviews do go in time somewhat as well so it may appear that some upgrades were done.

My arrival had some issues on check in that were minor. I had two newer front desk clerks and had sent me the wrong direction for the room. To be fair i missed the sign pointing to my room wing as well. I had gone back to front desk for clarification. by this time a senior clerk was at the desk as well. He saw what room i was in and must have thought i was complaining about it, which i hadn;t but he said i am going to give you a better room. The room was on first floor. View from room was over the street and faced parking garage. It did have a balcony but I did not use it. I could have cared less about the balcony part - never used it. I had an apartment before and i found the balcony pretty useless and not a fault of the hotel is that there were a significant amount bird droppings on it. That is near impossible to keep up with.

The room was clean and had a kitchennete. Bed was ok, fairly quiet area of hotel, Only issues are the tv is a bit small and the a/c was loud. Wasn't there to watch tv but a little bit larger and newer would be an improvement. The A/C was loud. I found a workaround. Being mexico and tile, it cools and retains it. I would put the a/c on when i would leave the room for an hour. Came back and room was cool.

As i was alone and was doing various touring i did not get a chance for and a la carte. being alone and no schedule I decided not to look at. A few times i ate at vendors in town, or at the buffet. breakfast was ok at both the villas and canto. Canto had a larger selection. The food was ok but nothing really was spectacular. This could be me though as of late i haven't found eating that exciting.

The hotel was a solid three star.the hotels is in need of some upgrades but I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Staying at the Villas opposite the Canto is the preferred and much quieter option, especially if you can manage a pool suite. The room was kept immaculately clean and the staff in the Villas were very helpful. The food at the Cantos was disappointing, especially at their signature Surf & Turf Oceanside restaurant. We found the food in the two restaurants in the Villas ( Italian & Steak ) to be much better. The buffet was redeemed by the "eggs any way you want them" lady at breakfast and the grilled sandwich lady at lunch. Always good! The pastries were outstanding.

Room tip: Pool Suite at The Villas!

We stayed at the Villas and enjoyed or stay we found like most other reviews it was the staff that made the place. This was my first trip to Puerto Vallarta and my partners 3rd time but both our first time at this resort. Our room was clean and modest but it did have some minor issues. The air conditioner was noisy (more than what one should expect) I found the bed a little uncomfortable (but my partner did not) The bed was also on wheels and unless the bed was chocked with a towel one might find themselves rolling around the room. We had a nice big patio and could easily pick up the wifi while enjoying morning coffee. The pool and bar at the villas was small and quiet. We were all inclusive so we were allowed access to the Canto del Sol a short walk across the small road / driveway. The Canto is a more updated place and again it is the staff that makes this place better value. The pool was good size and was well maintained for its cleanliness. The snack bar was great service and the food was good but I found it had a bit of a limited menu. Eduardo and Hugo both provided outstanding service. If I had one major complaint it would be that the designated smoking area was right at the access to the beach. You have to walk through the "smoke pit" in order to get to and from the beach. The beach is small and as mentioned in other reviews there is a very strong undertow. It is really strong currents and the depth drops off very quickly. The a la carts were a bit hit and miss, I had the best meal at the surf and turf yet it was not consistently great. The Italian place was very good as was the grill, the only one I didn't care that much for was the Santa Maria, I don't know if I just caught them on a bad night, but I just didn't think it was very good. The entertainment was really sub par and although staff tried hard it was well bad, Luckily the Malecon is a 5$ cab ride.

Room tip: In the villas 510 - 515 are off the pool 560's are on a noisy street

We stayed 8 days at Canto del sol(which we stayed at last year) and another 8 days at Villas. We truly enjoyed the resort staff last year and again this year. We enjoyed the Villas since our room was right on pool grounds. The rooms at Canto are definitely newer and more modern decor. The one at Villas was fairly clean but smelled like cigarette. Between the two we did enjoy the villas, especially for the price and quietness. You don't need to get up early to reserve chairs at the pool like at the Canto. And again the service was excellent. Jose, Ernesto, Pablo, Cris and Oscar are just a few of the best bartenders/servers. Can't wait to go again next year!!!

We have been '' WELCOMED HOME'' two times now and will be back! This resort is small (quiet) so you will know the staff and guests within 1-2 days. Go all- inclusive & get all the features of Canto Del Sol (lots of action) just 50 paces away. Excellent security staff! Don't forget to tip as most workers only make about 10 - 60 peso / day ($1.00 - $6.00) and they work hard so you can enjoy your vacation !

Room tip: After checking-into assigned room - walk the whole place (it's a maze) - Talk to other guests or bellboys - choose an area you may prefer (quiet, pool view, etc) . I found the reception desk very helpful with room changes.
