I was extremely nervous about coming to this hotel after reading numerous negative reviews on this site. Having now spent two and a half weeks at the hotel I can only say that people need to get their expectations in check before going on holiday. If you want 5 star luxury treatment then you should pay a 5 star price and stay in a hotel that offers that kind of service. While this hotel is not perfect and there are a couple of things that could be improved to make this hotel even better, for the price I paid it was absolutely fabulous and both myself and my girlfriend and the other couple who travelled with us loved the hotel and would go back in a heartbeat
We booked to stay in a crown club room, which at the time of booking was for a very reasonable price. if you are travelling to this hotel without kids I cannot recommend enough that you do this. The room was great, very large hot-tub, lovely bathroom, room on the 7th floor with amazing view, bathrobes, slippers, fruit bowl and champagne on arrival and a lunch cruise on the lagoon (more on this later). The room was cleaned everyday and was left spotless by the maid who done a great job. I have read many people moaning on here about the beds being horrible, I was expecting to arrive and be sleeping on a bed of nails judging by some of the reviews, needless to say this turned out to be rubbish and I found the bed very comfortable and large.
One of the things I loved most about this hotel was the entertainment by the main pool during the day. There was games such as water polo, volleyball etc in the pool at 11am, 2pm and 4pm, which if you got involved in were great fun and a good way to get to know others in the hotel. The entertainment team work morning noon and night in this hotel and really made you feel welcome.
With regards to drinks and bars in the hotel we found these to be good. Like most hotels in cancun if your looking for really lively entertainment your better off going out to the clubs and the hotel reps took people out every night. The barmen in the hotel would make you up any drink or shot you wanted and we found the bars good for having a few drinks and a few games of pool before heading out for the night. The swim up bar in the adult pool was also great fun and a good way to meet people and have fun.
We didn’t have any problem booking restaurants as with the club room we could book them through the private concierge. We ate in all of the restaurants except for the fishermans. One of the things this hotel comes into the most critism for is the food. And I would agree somewhat that it could be improved. If they made some simple changes they could really improve people experience dramatically. Heres what i thought of the restaurant choices
Italian- This was our favourite place to eat, a really varied menu with loads of choice, everything we tried here was very tasty and the service was great. We went here for my girlfriends birthday and were treated brilliantly with plenty of cocktails and a chocolate cake.
Waynes Boots- This was our least favourite place to eat, both the service and the food was poor both times we ate here. They have taken all of their hot appetizers off the menu and the steaks are of very poor quality.
French-We ate here 3 or 4 times and it was very nice. My only criticism is that the menu is not very varied and there is limited choice. in saying that what we did have was very nice particularly the fillet steak.
Mexican- I found this restaurant to be decent, the menu hadn’t got much choice but i really liked the beef tacos and the fajitas
Buffet-This is the area I feel the hotel really needs to improve. For breakfast and lunch i found the buffet to be great but I had a real issue with the quality of the food at dinner. If you are going to make it difficult for people to get reservations in the speciality restaurants then you need to make sure the quality of the food is good in the buffet. I found the quality of the food to be poor and cheap. They usually had a beef, pork and chicken dish. the chicken would invariably be chicken thigh or drumsticks rather than breast and the beef and pork dishes were usually some sort of stew. Not what i would expect to eat after paying for an all inclusive holiday. We ate in the speciality restaurants most nights so it was ok to eat in here every now and again if we were late coming back off a tour or whatever but i can understand people complaining having to eat here alot on their holiday if they can’t get a reservation in a speciality restaurant. A couple of simple improvement here would go along way I feel.
Pool Snack Bar- We loved this place for a snack during the day, lovely burgers cooked fresh and nachos etc. they do a different special everyday and the fish and chicken wings were beautiful.
Japanese-I was most looking forward to trying this place having seen some very positive reviews. However I found it to be awful. It seems to have changed from a place were you could go in and order food fresh to a buffet. I found the food to be bland and stale and not nice.
As part of our upgrade to a crown club lounge we got a lunch cruise included. You do indeed get lunch on the cruise but this is very much a secondary issue. This cruise is a booze cruise and we had a brilliant afternoon. The crowd was made up of young and old and everyone got involved in the games that were played including the bar staff. The entertainment rep Vasti had people up participating the whole time and it was great fun. I would recommend anyone who stay in a club room to take advantage of this.
All of the pool were really nice the beach is absolutely beautiful. The water on the beach can be rough on some days so be careful. The hotel, pool and beach were spotless during our stay with the staff literally constantly cleaning the place. These people work tirelessly and I feel some of the reviews of this hotel are a huge disservice to them. Like I said before if you expect 5 star royal treatment then they should pay for it. You just cant please some people its a simple as that. We had a great time here, we got involved in the activities and made the most of our time and we had an amazing holiday.
