I would like to start this review by saying that we went on this vacation with a couple that we go away with each and every year and we are NOT picky or needy people. We arrived on April 14th and checked out on the 21st 2012...If a vacation was all about what the resort looked like then this would have been first class - the grounds are gorgeous and exceptionally maintained...the rooms were nice - the beds were double beds and a little tight if your used to Queen and/or King size - we booked the Royal Club which cost an additional fee...altho we're not sure what we got for the extra money. Most of the staff were very nice and tried to be accommodating ...
Most of our vacations are all-inclusive and always "Royal Service" - if you're looking for that with this resort, don't waste your money...the Royal Club restaurant was very nice and the staff were absolutely wonderful but the food left something to be desired UNLESS you booked the 'special menu' for $30/pp per night...and then you were served lobster tail which was amazing..but they do not make a point of advertising this special menu but luckily we spoke to other ppl there and heard about it....so much for all-inclusive. We ate at the La Piazza our second night at the resort - it was horrible. Our reservation was for 7 p.m. - we arrived at 6:50 and were told that they aren't open yet and we had to wait to be seated .. this is an outdoor restaurant so we sat at one of the tables and the waiter came over and asked us to wait to be seated - we had met some ppl that were also going there that night but had 8:30 reservations - they asked the waiter if they could switch their reservation to be able to eat with us and they were told absolutely not...we thought that maybe they were booked but we were the ONLY ppl there and every other table was empty so that made no sense to us...the menu consisted of 'panini's' which was actually a cold ham and cheese 6" hero with one slice of ham and one slice of cheese - and personal pizzas which weren't cooked enough...basically inedible. We reserved the Sonora Grill for the next night (supposedly a steak house) - very quaint with wonderful staff once again but the food was nothing to write home about...we didn't bother to stay for dessert ..we decided that the rest of the trip would be in the Royal Club restaurant until we realized that the menu NEVER changes...they serve the same 5 items every single day...we ended up going into town to eat 2 nights during the week...AND the reservation system at the resort is terrible. we attempted to make a reservation for the royal club on Tuesday for Thursday and were told that they wouldn't be able to let us know until Thursday at 4 p.m. whether or not we could have it...we were told on Thursday that they couldn't fit us in so we went to town...arrived back at the resort around 8 to find that the restaurant was completely empty and yet they couldn't accommodate us. The best food at this resort and basically what we lived on was the pool buffet which opened at 12:00 every day...there was a variety and we could always find something we enjoyed. They closed at 4:00 each day. At least we had food we could tolerate...and the breakfast buffet at La Posada was okay also. The Royal Club breakfast was very good but only offered 4 selections with the same menu again that never changed.
We got the impression that they have cut back on staff at the resort...we went to the beach every morning...there was only one day of the 7 spent there that someone came around to see if they could get us drinks .. we told him that we would give him a nice tip if he kept coming back the rest of the day - we gave him half upfront and he promised to take care of us .. we never saw him again!! we asked about him at the pool bar and were told that he was 'around' - we didn't do that again - we just took turns going and standing on line at the pool bar. The drinks were good and there was definitely no shortage of alcohol - they gave you anything and everything you requested. The 'daily' drinks were made very light but if you asked for 'extra' they didn't hesitate.
Being a "royal club' visitor we had a 'jacuzzi' outside of our block of rooms - first it was cold and second only half of the jets were working...and again no service and if you wanted a drink you had to go into the royal restaurant and request one ... the only time they weren't very friendly was between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and you basically had to beg for anything you wanted.
I got so frustrated on our second day there trying to deal with restaurant reservations and being told that they couldn't accommodate us that I asked them what exactly I paid for by booking Royal Club...the woman (Nellie) could not answer my question so I got up and left the office. About an hour later I received a phone call in my room from someone in 'customer service' telling me that I should go back to the office and I would be given the reservations I needed and that they were sending a bottle of champagne to our room to make up for our frustrations...and our last night there we booked yet another 'special menu' dinner and the waiter told us that the 'captain' wanted us to have a bottle of champagne on the house so we could end our trip on a good note, which was nice but didn't make up for all the inconveniences and frustrations we encountered during the week.
We made the best of the situation and still enjoyed our vacation - we met a lot of ppl that felt the same way we did with all the same complaints. Over all we enjoyed the vacation but wish we had chosen a different resort ... we will definitely pay attention to the reviews that are left from this point forward - we thought that ppl were just being overly picky and complainers...that is not the case when it comes to this resort...we were VERY unimpressed and won't go back again.
