They were doing construction on the upper pool, however it didn't impact our visit; there are still 3 other pools to choose from. Ocassionally heard construction noise in the area by the beach, but it wasn't terrible. They just laid new stonework and it's beautiful. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Pools were warm and great selection of different types of pools (shallow, deep, slide, etc).
The beach was beautiful, turquoise waters where the waves crash. The beach was very long, could take a nice walk along it. The sand was very gravelly (and hot) though. The waves were pretty powerful with a strong undertow. Not a great beach to let kids play in alone, always a "red flag" day. But it's beautiful to look at.
The room was fine but nothing spectacular; we didn't end up getting one of the remodeled ones, so it looked dated, but was fine for what we needed it for; not luxurious though (although very cool stone bathtubs). We had issues with the A/C, so they had to come daily to look at it; but we were told on the last day that if the sliding door wasn't closed completely (even a tiny crack) the AC would turn off---good to know!
Seemed to be mostly mid-older couples. There were a few kids, although not many. Few groups of 18-21, but they kept to themselves. In fact, it seemed that most everyone kept to themselves. The main activity pool had lots of activities like bingo, volleyball, trivia, fashion shows, etc. Since I'm not really into that type of thing, we stayed away from that.
The bar served excellent pina coladas, yummy!
There is a grocery store in front of the hotel along with a deli, bakery, coffee shop, ice cream stand and vendors selling jewelry, etc. Very convenient. The vendors on the beach definitely try to sell their wares, but if you say no, they don't hound you. They actually had some nice things, jewelry, pottery,etc...and are willing to bargain.
We only went into town once. The walk is kind of "iffy" because it feels like you're lost, I probably would take a taxi ($7) next time. Found a GREAT little hole in the wall restaurant called "Taco Loco". It's amazing food and super cheap. Zero atmosphere. It's in the courtyard under Cabo Wabo by the t-shirt stands.
The time share "sharks" are everywhere, offering activities, etc. They look like employees and come across very friendly...then you realize you're sucked in.
Overall it was a great place to stay. Their sister resort VIlla los Arcos is newer and more upscale, but the pool was SO CROWDED! Much prettier from the outside though. Amazing gym, not your average "hotel gym", and it's free to use (which surprised me). All new equipment, very clean, lots of space. The spa looked nice as well although I didn't go this time. They have specials daily, so check those before paying full price.
