The Storm Mountain Lodge is one of the best kept secrets of Banff and area. I have been living in Calgary for over 20 years and just recently found out about this gem nestled in the Canadian Rockies. Some may consider this rustically natural lodge (originally a CP rail lodge) a little pricey for dinner, however having been to many of the top notch restaurants in Calgary, this gem is worth every penny.
This place oozes rustic charm. The service is professional and friendly. The atmosphere warm and romantic. Paired with scenic mountain views as well as a friendly hummingbird dinner companion, even the most choosiest of diners will not be dissapointed.
Oh, did I forget to mention the Food?
Gastonomic connoisseurs will delight in the simple dinner menu. 4 appetizers, 5 entrees and a varied daily of 2 desserts would appease even Chef Ramsey! In short, Chef Jeremy Tucker knows good food.
Storm Mountain Lodge sources only local and organic ingredients and you can taste the quality in each delicious bite.
Even down to the drinks we had locally made (in Canmore) Grumpy Bear pale ale (of course paired with a frosted mug) and Cream Soda (low cal!).
We started by sharing a Trio of Salads, Asparagus and minted new potato salad with
sundried tomato mayonnaise, tomato basil salad, organic greens with citrus vinaigrette. If only all salads came this way! Each sub salad had a unique and full flavour, loved the potato salad with its pairng with sundried tomatos and the comprehensive flavours of the tomato salad. The asparagus was young and fresh, as if picked from a back garden.
The entrees were amazing. Organic Chicken breast with pine nuts, angelhair pasta, chanterelle mushroom jus. My husband chose the Alberta Bison Tenderloin, with
rosemary roasted organic fingerling potatoes, bison jus. My chicken had more flavour than I've had anywhere, this is what chicken SHOULD taste like. I didn't appreciate the difference in sourcing the ingredients until tasting my first bite of this chicken. The angelhair pasta with the amazing mushroom sauce was tremendous. I could have eaten an entire entree size of the pasta alone! The Bison was one of the best we've had, and we've dabbled at many top tier restaurants in the Calgary area as well as other metropolitan cities. The bison was tender and flavourful with potatoes that indicated young potatoes from the first bite.
Finishing off this deletable meal was a fresh cherry cobbler (sourced from freshly picked okanagan cherries). Never a fan of cobblers.. this dessert brought to mind of a long ago time, when desserts were made to highlight the natural flavour of the ingredients.
If you're looking for a rustic and romantic location to impress your significant other, and you appreciate the natural and simple elegance of local and organic ingredients (far removed from heavy creams and overabundant sauces that mask what you're eating), then head to Storm Mountain Lodge (make sure you gps the location so you don't drive by the remote lodge by the highway). Needless to say, we'll definitely return :)
