Attended the Farmer's Market in Penticton in late July and was amazed at the incredible produce that the farmers had trucked in on this balmy Saturday morning. The market runs May - October and from 8:30am to Noon. It is located on Main street, right in front of the Casino, so it is walking distance if you're staying at a motel on Lake Okanagan.
You have to be an early riser to attend, but when you see the types of fruit and vegetables on offer, you'll be glad you did. I had arrived at 8:20 and the vendors were still setting up their stalls, but the variety and rainbow of colours on the lettuce alone was inspiring. Seeing the vegetables in their natural state with stems and leaves on was mouth watering. I ended up buying 2 heads of lettuce I have never even seen before (purply red, the other oak leafed), a bag of arugula (fiery hot n spicy), some russian garlic (very strong, with purple stripes), some seasonal cherries and 3 types of beets! (Striped, golden and deep purple)
There were baked goods on offer, food trucks with breakfast items, artists selling everything from jewellery to woodwork, masseuses, and much more. It spans about a 4 block length, and gets very busy come 9am.
The vendors prices are very reasonable (half of what you'd pay in a big city at your organic grocer)
It's a great way to teach kids about sustainable growth, and introduce them to some foods that supermarkets don't carry - yes, there is a whole lot of food that you never knew existed out there! The best thing is that the food was picked the day before, so it is not a week old and wilting by the time you get it. You can taste the difference! Enjoy
