We spent two nights at Gowrie House in Aug. 2007. Our room on the second floor, front of the main house, was Canadian $145 plus 15 percent tax, per night. Gowrie is truely a large old house (not sure about other buildings on the property) that is lavishly furnished with antiques or reproductions of antiques (we cannot always tell the difference). The large grounds are attractive. Thankfully, our room was air conditioned. Breakfast, included, was excellent, and the innkeeper was very nice, too. The full name of Gowrie House is "Gowrie House Country Inn." The only difficulty is that it's not really in what I would call the "country," but rather on a residential street in the town of Sydney Mines. But that's a minor point.
If you visit, I'd suggest getting good directions in advance. Our visit to the Gowrie House was toward the end of a tourist trip to Cape Breton Island, which is largely rural. Most places we stayed were on the only road in the area and therefore easy to find. Not so the Gowrie House. It is in Sydney Mines, part of the greater Sydney metropolitan area. When we arrived in the general area we realized we had no idea where to go. We exited the highway at North Sydney, which is actually south of Sidney Mines, and pulled into a strip shopping center to ask directions. To make a long story short, the first couple we saw in the parking lot and asked for directions broke off their shopping trip and went out of their way to guide us in their car 3 or 4 miles to the Gowrie. Talk about local hospitality to tourists. Talk about luck. One of our principal reasons for visiting Cape Breton Island was Celtic music. As it turned out, our "guides" told us they were the parents of Kimberley Fraser, a prominent young Cape Breton fiddler, pianist and step dancer. Several days later we tried to catch her Kimberley's performance in Iona, but time would not allow. However, we have ordered a copy of her most recent CD, "Falling on New Ground."
We also had dinner at the Gowrie House, and have submitted a separate review for that experience.
