“Clean, Basic, and Mostly Quiet.. But Would it Kill Them to Answer Their Phone?”
South Lake Tahoe can get pricey during ski season, so we were glad to see that the Lazy S Lodge, with $75/night rates, was rated so highly here at tripadvisor.com. Considering it was less than half the cost of most other lodging we could find on the internet, we called them up and made our reservation.
One week prior to our trip, I made three or four calls to confirm that our reservation was on the books, but nobody was picking up the phone. So, with a little bit of concern that we'd end up sleeping in our car for the week, we hopped on our flight and made our way to Tahoe. We arrived at the Lazy S Lodge at 2pm on a Sunday to find that the office door was locked and no one was around. The motel is several miles from Heavenly and one of the last ones on the road out of town. Our concern grew as we walked around the property looking for anyone. We found a maid who pointed us to one of the rooms, whereupon the manager stumbled out fresh from his afternoon nap. He was a nice enough guy, explaining it had been a busy weekend. He said our room would be ready in an hour, so we went and rented our skis and bought some groceries. In the motel's defense, they do state that check in is 3pm.
We returned to find our room ready for us. It was clean and simple -- just what we wanted. It had full and twin size beds, a small 2-seat table and a kitchenette with a sink, small fridge, toaster, and coffee maker. All of it was very basic. The interior walls were both wood paneling or sheetrock, with signs that some of the sheetrock in the ceiling had been replaced -- I'm guessing due to water damage. That's not a complaint, it's just a reality.
During the week, there were only one or two other units occupied, so it was very quiet. Other than the daily housekeeping there was no sign of any staff on the property, which we wouldn't have minded except for the fact that the bathroom sink got clogged up mid-week (must be all those whitening chemicals in my toothpaste) and we couldn't find anybody on site to come to our aid with a plunger. Alas, we persevered, lasting through the night and left a note for the housekeeper, who remedied the situation the next day.
Our last night, a Friday night, was much different than the rest. The motel filled up and was a bit noisier, with college age kids having a bit of late night fun in the parking lot. Not too rowdy, but different from the absolute quiet experienced Sunday through Thursday.
One thing I did notice is that this motel during winter would not be ideal for those with mobility issues. All the sidewalks were very icy and there was little the staff could do about it. The roofline constantly dripped on the sidewalk leaving 5-6 inches of ice over the concrete. It took several acrobatic manuevers to stay upright on the slippery surface while getting in and out of our room.
There are dozens of other cheap motels in Tahoe -- almost all of which are closer to downtown -- but because most don't have websites, you only find out about them once you get there. So, it is a huge advantage for the Lazy S Lodge to have a website and a page here on tripadvisor.com.
All things considered, the Lazy S Lodge was basic, clean, and quiet, which earns them 4 stars in my book. But then I had to subtract a star because they don't have dedicated office staff to answer their phone or assist with visitor needs. Not to worry, though, because they earned that star back by being one of the few $75/night motels in Tahoe that is relatively easy to find on the web. Huzzah! 4 stars!
