I've stayed in a lot of places all over the planet crossing four continents, from the third world to the G-8, from youth hostels to luxury hotels, but this has to be the absolute worst hotel I've ever seen. Firstly, it's situated right next to railroad tracks, so every time a train goes by at all hours of the night you hear it as if you were right on the platform.
None, and I mean * none* of the doors are locked or have key access, so really anybody can walk in to the hotel without a key-this really isn't safe.
There seems to be two parts to the hotel. The newer part and the older part. My wife and I were given a room in the older part, which I assume used to be the smoking section. The hotel claims to be entirely smoke free, but the entire hallway and our room stunk like cigarettes. As my wife is expecting, I would have liked a clean, non-smoking room as advertised. We ended up staying here with all the odours, because the hotel was entirely booked and they couldn't really move us to another room.
Once we entered the room, we found no coffee maker or iron/ironing board as promised. We also found dead insects and cobwebs in the corners of the room, and a partially clogged bathtub drain as well as cigarette burns through the sheets as well as on the nightstand.
We complained about the dirtyness of the room in the morning, and when we returned that night nothing was cleaned.
Also, we do like a firm mattress, but this was like sleeping on Melba Toast. Good lord, both of us woke up with sore backs and are still trying to recover.
The free hi-speed internet is questionable, because apparently only the lobby has wireless, but the rooms do not. Also, our room was so outdated that the television was on old RCA circa 1983, which did not have a remote nor could we order in-room movies. Considering that there's only one movie house in town, it would seem to make sense to make movies orderable in all hotel rooms.
To top it off, when we complained about the foul odour in our room, the person we spoke to offered us a discount on our second night. When we checked out, we were told that there was no record of this so we were told that we have to phone the Howard Johnson's main number to complain and ask for a refund, which might be non-existent at this point because there's no record stating that we were promised a discount.
I might mention that the breakfast included is pretty disappointing, as it consists of coffee, cereal, loaf bread probably from Giant Tiger, one type of jam, and neon orange juice, whose toxicity might turn you into a super hero if you drink too much of it. Of course, I'm not expecting champagne, but other hotels I've stayed at at this level would at least have yogurt or danishes/croissants as well. Continental breakfast? Bahhh, in what continent is this considered a breakfast?
However, all this considered, the rate was cheap. We paid about $64 a night on a weekend in the summer, and we only booked the hotel as a bed to sleep as we spent our day at Sandbanks Provincial Park. It's about an hour or so away from the park, at a fraction of the price of the other hotels/B&Bs in Prince Edward County. But, this hotel did not provide a clean, safe, comfortable and quiet place to spend the night, and it seems like the cleanliness issues aren't addressed when one complains.
