I first stayed at the Best Western Valemount for business in 2010 and then again in June 2011 for our honeymoon. The hotel had made such an impression on me during my business trip that I had vowed to go back as soon as I could.
I've stayed in many hotels for work and leisure, all over British Columbia and elsewhere in Canada and the world, so it's taking more and more to get a "wow" from me. This hotel got that "wow" from the moment I walked in. The sitting area off of the lobby is something truly special. Beautiful stone and natural woodwork, vaulted ceilings, and just a great vibe. Even the staircase leading upstairs is beautiful to look at.
During my business trip in 2010, I had the occasion to use the amazing Eagle's View banquet room. Wow. Photos cannot do this room justice. The vaulted ceiling and the extensive windows perfectly frame the nature sitting right outside. In the Spring and Summer, you get to see the beautiful greenery and the stunning mountains. If you're looking for a spectacular place to have a wedding banquet and don't mind a bit of a drive, this is your place. I should also mention that all the staff we had the pleasure of dealing with during our business activities were helpful, professional, and friendly. All of our activities went off without a hitch.
During our honeymoon in June 2011, my initial impression of the Best Western Valemount was confirmed. I had booked a King Jacuzzi room with a mountain view. We arrived very late (almost midnight) because our wedding dinner had run long, but the fatigue was soon forgotten when we saw the spacious room, the cozy Jacuzzi tub for two, the gas fireplace, and the beautiful king bed.
The next morning when we woke up, we were completely dazzled by the view that met our eyes when we opened the door onto the balcony! Mountain view indeed. It exceeded both our expectations completely. We ordered room service and ate at the table by the balcony, with the door wide open, letting the fresh air and sunlight in. Afterward, we basked in the sunlight on the balcony in our complimentary bathrobes, while admiring the mountains and the beautiful grounds surrounding the hotel. (My only want would be for more comfortable/sturdy chairs on the balcony. When they had sat in the hot sun too long, they became very wobbly because the plastic softened.)
The bed was very comfortable and clad in pristine white sheets and duvet, topped off with tons of great pillows. The room itself was very spacious and had a microwave and fridge (as all the rooms do). Everything was well-maintained and very clean.
A lot of people were a bit surprised when I mentioned that we were going to Valemount for our honeymoon. "Why would you choose that hotel in the middle of nowhere?" Here are some great reasons:
1) Valemount is only 30 km from beautiful Mount Robson Provincial Park, which has some of the best hiking in BC (and perhaps even in Canada).
2) Valemount is only 120 km from the city of Jasper and Jasper National Park. You can spend the day hiking in JNP and then finish off your day with a delicious dinner in one of the many superb restaurants in Jasper. Or if hiking isn't your thing, you can spend your day shopping and touring in Jasper too. The drive to Jasper is scenic, framed between world-class views of mountains, rivers and trees. We saw several each of moose, elk, bears, eagles, deer -- you name it.
3) Valemount isn't a tourist trap. The prices are reasonable, the locals are friendly, and the pace of life is relaxed. It's the perfect "home base" for your vacation in the area.
4) Last and certainly not least: The hotel. It's truly one of the most memorable places I've ever stayed at, and we just can't wait until we can go back. We were only able to stay 3 days and we were truly sad that we had to leave so soon. We have so much more exploring to do, and definitely much more relaxing in that Jacuzzi tub!
Oh, and also worth noting is that on the first afternoon of our stay, a staff member came up to deliver a complimentary bottle of wine and a small box of chocolates to help us celebrate our wedding. It was a simple gesture, but it made us feel like guests and not just another folio number.
Regarding the food in the hotel, we had breakfast both in our room and in the restaurant during our stay. The service was fast and friendly and the food was pretty good and well-priced.
Finally, although we didn't avail ourselves of these amenities because of our plans outside of the hotel, I understand from the hotel's website that the Best Western Valemount has a very nice pool with waterslide, hot tub, an exercise room, and other amenities to offer.
Thank you to all the staff at Best Western Valemount. You helped make our honeymoon so memorable and we will be back again soon!
If at all possible, get a room with a mountain view. All the rooms are nice, but the mountain views...
