I have no idea how this qualifies as a Hotel and how it has achieved a high rating eludes me. The Car park is way to small with restricted parking on the main road. The owners were pleasent enough but on entering the bulding my heart sank as the lobby area was poorly decorated and not very clean. We had a room on the second floor which was of a good size with a large double bed, however the mattress was very unforgiving and as my wife is Disabled it presented a problem. After talking with the owners it was agreed they would try and find a softer mattress so we went for a look around and to get our bearings and on our return they had replaced the mattress with a softer one and padded it out with a quilt. This was greatly appreciated by my wife and so we settled in before preparing to go out for an evening meal. Unfortunately things just went from bad to worse, as i went to make a cup of coffee i found that the kettle had water in it from the previous guests and that the tray the cups were on had coffee stains on it. My next discovery was in the bathroom which although of a good size had the smallest bath i have ever seen, anyone over the age of 10 would have struggled to fit in it and the sides were so high that even at 6 foot i had trouble getting in, and as my wife is only 5 foot and has mobility issues it was impossible to use. The only heating was an outdated ceiling lamp/heater combination which did little to warm the room up. We were celebrating my wife's birthday so i had wanted everything to be perfect but it was becoming increasingly apparant that i had made a big mistake booking this so called Hotel. We tried to keep our spirits up and found a nice restaurant about a 20 minute drive away so set of for a celebratory meal. We returned to the Hotel at around 10.30pm and found that the room was freezing, as it was blowing a gale outside and the window was not double glazed. so i turned up the radiator but nothing happened so my wife had to resort to using a hairdryer to warm up the bed as she had goosebumps on her arms. After a fitful nights sleep we were woken at around 6.30 am by creaking floorboards from the room above and due to the fact it was just a normal house adapted into accommadation you could hear all the other guests getting ready for breakfast, and every word that was said. The plumbing was ancient and every time anyone flushed the toilet it made a hideous noise. Our toilet took around 10 attempts before it would flush correctly, but the icing on the cake came when i attempted to run a shower only to discover we had no hot water, by this time i just wanted to leave and find another hotel as we had booked 2 nights here but i had no intention of subjecting my poor wife to another night in that Hotel. I approached the owner and informed him we had no hot water and he did not seem unduly suprised, from what i can gather the plumbing system is so outdated once a few guests have showered all the hot water is used up and the boiler takes ages to re-heat the water up again. I then remarked that we had no heating when we came back in the night and the owner asked me what time we came back, 10.30pm i said, oh no wonder he said the heating switches itself of at 10pm. What type of Hotel limits its guests as to when they can use the heating, obviously as they retired early they had set the timer to go of early evening, which in your own house would be fine but its not much use when you have paying guests who have to spend the night in a freezing cold room. One of the guests at breakfast overheard us and commented on the fact that her husband had showered first but by the time she had wanted one all the hot water had gone so it was obviously a common problem which should have been addressed. Some of the guests were checking out so the owner offered us another room with a larger bath and hopefully hot water, so i went with him to view it only to find the water was cold in that room as well. We decided enough was enough and checked out, although i was still asked to pay half of the room costs for the remaining night which considering the issues we had i think was outrageous. This place needs a large amount of money spent on updating the facilities and it appeared to me it was being run on a budget. We moved into a premier inn nearby which was the same price and absolutely superb. This whole experience ruined what was meant to be a special weekend away and in my opinion the owners could have handled the situation better. This Hotel is not Disabled friendly yet no mention is made of this in the information given and the bath in our room would be totally unsuitable for any elderly or overweight guests.

As readers will see from all our other responses to reviews, we would normally start by thanking the person for their comments (both good and bad) and addressing those which we feel need a response (these are normally the negatives of course)

However, where do you start with this one ? When your wife has severe mobility issues wouldn't you think to check that their is a lift (or it is a Ground Floor room) prior to booking ? When you come downstairs after half an hour and start the conversation with 'its probably my own fault because I didn't check before booking . . .' and yet the reviewer still tries to make out WE have ruined his wifes birthday. When they commented on the mattress being too hard for her ('like it is in every Hotel we have stayed in. . ' he added) we went out of our way to help. We asked our daughter if she would mind giving up her mattress for the night, and we swapped it out AND put 2 spare duvets on top of that to try and make it as soft as possible.
We are 1 of about a dozen Hotels on this road, and although our car park is small we are the ONLY one of these Hotels to have a parking space available for every room. And the complaint about restricted parking comes from someone who displays a blue badge when parking anyway ?
We could go on and pick fault with all the review - we won't - the short comings of the Hotel are well documented in other reviews on here. We DO have old plumbing, most issues arise on the top floor though, this reviewer was not staying on the top floor. We accept we have issues to deal with, and each are being addressed in turn. (See the transformation of Room 1 which was where the majority of our bad reviews originated from)
His Room Tip is to find a different Hotel, I checked what other 'Room Tips' the Hotel had received. 4 of those tips mentioned Room 2 specifically, and all in a good light. This reviewer stayed in Room 2. Draw your own conclusions from that.
I won't continue with any more comments, I am sure most readers here are savvy enough to ignore the best and the worst reviews and take a 'fair average' of the middle ones. The Reviewers final line says we are not disabled friendly and yet we make no mention of this. . . ?? Well, in that case, we are not golf course friendly, we don't have a view of the Eiffel Tower, we don't have access onto our own private beach, we don't . . where do I stop with what we don't have ?? I think I am better just sticking to documenting, honestly, what we do have and the services we DO offer and leave the discerning traveller to choose what offering they would like to receive.
