Table booked for family dinner to celebrate Mum's 84th Birthday can only be described as one of the worse evenings of my life. The only positive feedback I can give is that the food was very good.
The overall ambience was one of indifference, the staff appeared miserable and were unwelcoming. Clearly this is an establishment which relies on regular customers and they appear to be treated with much more respect than the new visitors. This has created an unhealthy atmosphere which is very apparent upon entering the establishment.
From the point of ordering the desserts, things deteriorated very quickly. One order was for a fruit crumble. The waitress failed to inform our table at the point of order that it is made from scratch, thus taking 45 minutes from time of order. After waiting at least 30 minutes, we questioned why the desserts were taking so long. A grumpy waitress then confirmed why. Desserts eventually arrived, but two were wrong and even after the 45 minute delay for the fruit crumble, we were still waiting on 2 ice-creams. I asked the sulky waitress to send the manager/ to my table. Further waiting and no response so I walked to the bar and approached a lady who was laughing and chatting to 'a male regular'. I asked if she was the manager and she said she was. I expressed my anger that she had though it more important to have a laugh and a joke at the bar, when clearly there were problems in the restaurant area. I was accused of being aggressive. The 'male regular' joined in the conversation, uninvited, and said that he was ordering a fruit crumble and was checking how long it takes to cook. Clearly this conversation was deliberately 'set up' to save the owner/manager's face.
Things went from bad to worse, another regular standing at the bar tried to have his say too, (vigorously defending the owner/manager). I continued to ask this lady's name and whether she was the owner or manager however this lady refused to answer and then threatened to call the police when my husband and I refused to pay the bill. Clearly, this lady and her staff need to attend a course in customer friendly skills as they are clueless in how to treat people with respect. My family and I are mature, professional, polite people and have never been subjected to anything like this before. It really upset us all and ruined my mum's birthday. Our table was booked for 7.30 pm and we left The Blathwayt at 10 pm. I have tried to find out since, who this lady is and what position she holds, without success, as I felt it appropriate to refer this matter to a higher authority. The minimum I can do therefore is to write this review to warn any other visitors to tread very carefully with this lady as she takes no prisoners. We were refunded the cost of 2 ice creams! Will we return? - never.
