I stayed at Churchills Hotel for 3/4 nights per week for over 3 months.

What to say? I feel quite lucky to have found this little haven, away from the anonymous corporate hotels in the city centre but close enough to walk in. Churchills is a hotel with character, from the main building to the cottages and suites along the back. All rooms that I stayed in were of a more than acceptable standard. As someone who needed to work from the hotel from time to time, the Wi-Fi connection was never less than excellent, allowing me to work online but also to watch online tv/Netflix etc without interruption.

Food was never less than excellent. A wide ranging menu catering to most tastes. Chris the chef (fantastic chap by the way) is as accommodating as a busy chef can be and will often come out to talk to customers about how they'd like their food. Not a service I've often seen elsewhere and very welcome.

Sky, Joss, Sarah, Martin and their colleagues run the bar and front of house very professionaly but with personality and fun. Take the time to talk to them...very lovely people. (Good luck at Uni Joss!) These ladies and gents, from my perspective of being away from home most of the week, made it quite special by taking the time to have a chat and get to know me as a customer and a person. They care about what they do and the people they're doing it for. That's a rare and valued combination.

That extends to other staff as well, so I will also mention Nick, Craig and Jason who were also adept at balancing that fine line between professional and social in their service.

So, summing up - it's not the Savoy or the Dorchester, but then you won't be paying those prices. What you will be getting for your money is a lovely place to stay, with far more character than the more corporate fare available in Cardiff. And the icing on the cake are the excellent staff who will ensure a warm welcome and a comfortable stay. Book your room at Churchills.

Room tip: All rooms I stayed in were good, but if you're staying for a few nights at a time, a suite or cottage is a little home from home

I booked this place for my boyfriend's birthday because it was less than a mile from where we were going out that night. We stayed in the Mews Suite rather than the main hotel because the prices were very similar, but it meant we were away from the main hotel corridors and having to put up with people walking past our room. This turned out to be a good choice as there was a rather noisy wedding party staying.
The hotel is pleasant enough but in great need of painting throughout. The room and general decor is rather dated. The shower over the bath is quite powerful. The bed was a "double" apparently but did seem rather small. The last time I stayed in a Mews suite here, there were two televisions, one next to the bed and the other in the "lounge" area. This time there was only one by the bed, and a very small tele at that. Only a small gripe though. The hotel staff were very welcoming and dealt effectively when we complained about a diner in the restaurant discreetly smoking by an open window and blowing the smoke out. Would stay here again because it is cheaper than a travel inn/premier inn on the weekend.

Room tip: Book the Mews suites/apartments because they are separate from the main hotel.

This was our 3rd stay at the Churchills and as we previously enjoyed it so much we decided to stay for the weekend following our wedding! We really loved the food in the bar and the steak and mixed grill were just perfect. We got kindly upgraded to one of the mews apartment as staff must have been told that it was our wedding weekend. The charm of not being a modernised standard place is just what we like and come back too. Yes we did got woken up by the fire alarm but these things do happen and did not male our stay less enjoyable. We will come back soon.

The staff we dealt with were pleasant and more than helpful, but sadly the hotel is let down by its overall standard.
Our room was on the top floor and looked out over the kitchen extractor fan area, this led to us having all the cooking smells coming directly into the room, we had no option but to shut the window.
The stair carpets are patched in various places by gaffer and duct tape on the front of the risers.
The walls have screw holes in them were obviously there used be pictures that have been removed.
Our toilet cistern was not secured to the wall, there was a gap of about an inch or so from the wall, the screws were hanging out the back of the cistern but not actually fixed to anything.
Marks on the walls in the room and tired and old furniture.
Breakfast was poor, obviously using cheap sausages.
Only two waiting staff on duty trying to deal with all the tables, led to no tables available for people as the tables had not been cleared, bless them they worked hard but it has all the signs of a loosing battle.
The dinging room is an extension area and is not that old, but the carpet is again patched with tape, the chandeliers have light bulbs out and again marks on the walls.
I am sure that the cottages at the back are better, but the main building is old and tired and in desperate need of an update.
£85 a night is seriously expensive for what this hotel offers.
The fire alarms went off three times during the night, (around 01:30, 06:30 and 06:40) we were not evacuated, or told no to leave or informed as to why they went off, 45 seconds or less of a piercing alarm and that was it, there could have been a real fire and no one would have left. Shocking health and safety practice.
The hotel is centrally placed and one assumes that this is why no updating is being done, it must be pretty busy with weddings and so forth but really it is not worth staying.
We will be returning to Cardiff again but never to this place.
I would suggest that you avoid it.
One small plus the wifi works, the instruction sheets list the wrong access points but it works.

Thank you your recent review, although it was not a great stay we do appreciate all feedback. We do need to look at the issues that you have raised. I can only apologize for you being kept up by the fire alarm, it is something we do not get issues with normally and we had not issues with it since you have stayed, to touch on the point about not being phoned after it was set off, we would come to each room and evacuate in the event of a fire but it is policy not call around the entire hotel in the event of a false alarm to prevent keeping everybody awake longer than we have to, I hope you understand and we hope to see you again,.

Churchill’s is in a good location. Easily accessible, with ample parking and yet a very pleasant 20 minute walk through Sofia Gardens to the castle and the centre
Bar had closed at 11 and there were no residents bar facilities.

Really friendly and helpful staff,

Stayed in the mews cottages, really suited us, would have benefitted with a fridge and bath mat, also hardly any off the lights worked and found the bed very uncomfortably.

The rooms, furniture, bathrooms, etc. are still as they were long time ago and would urgently need some refurbishment.free wfi was brill

It’s a shame if some money was spent on the place and brought it into 2014 with a modern twist it would be grand place.
