We found the guest house well located for visiting the city of Edinburgh, which is about a 30 minute walk from the centre. There are no parking restrictions and we had no trouble finding a parking space right outside the guesthouse.
On arrival we were a little disappointed. The hallway was dark, cold and uninviting, and the hall and stair carpets heavily stained. However, things soon improved. Colin, the proprietor, was a gentleman and very helpful. He had his maps and guides at the ready, and proceeded to point out the guest house location, the local landmarks, bus routes, best places to catch a bus to the centre, and a list of local restaurants.
We had a very comfortable, warm and clean en-suite room on the first floor, although the WC/shower-room, a later addition to the bedroom, was quite small and compact. Not all rooms are en-suite, so one night we were disturbed by doors opening and closing with other guests using the bathroom adjacent to our bedroom. Breakfast is pre-ordered (using a form) the evening before, and so arrives at your table soon after you have sat down. As well as cereals, juices and fruit, there is a choice of traditional English breakfast, scrambled egg with smoked salmon, haggis and a vegetarian option. I really appreciated the large pot of filter coffee. After a good hearty breakfast we found lunch wasn’t necessary.
If you’re visiting Edinburgh during a rainy season (like we where), then I would recommend the 2-day Edinburgh Bus Tours Plus ticket (£22 concessions or £24 adult). This gives you 48-hours to use any of the 5 guided city bus tours, and also included a Fourth Boat cruise to Inchcolm island, where if you get a morning departures, you may get the opportunity to stop on the island for 90 minutes, returning on a later boat. Inchcolm abbey is well worth the visit, as well as the chance to see nesting fulmars, puffins and eider ducks in the spring.
