I've stayed here a few times, simply because I got a very good deal. The location is great for the city centre, with easy access to Manchester Piccadilly train station. It is a large (once grand) hotel that is in need of a refurbishment. However, it was clean, with helpful and friendly staff. Although I didn't eat in any of it's restaurants, they looked pleasant, and comfortable. There are plenty of restaurants/bars/shops on your doorstep. Yes, I would stay here again.

Stayed here for one night in the week. We booked an executive room as it mentioned that the standard rooms have no windows. The room was of average size. Nice and clean with and tea and coffee provided and a small set of amenities in the bathroom. The room was a good temperature a little bit disappointed we didn't get a view as the window was only small and at head hight so you couldn't see out but it could be opened to let some air in. It was a little noisy but you are in the city and it didn't bother us too much. We were told we got a pizza with the room and also a bottle of wine. We had the wine when we arrived and were told last orders for pizza was 11.30pm so we came back at 11 to have it before bed but were then told they had shut the kitchen early. Breakfast was good the next day. Overall it wasn't appalling as some reviews make out and we were satisfied with our stay

A one-night stand in this conevenient and central old lady, parts of which are magnificent, with incredible chandeliers, parts - as noted by others - in need of refurbishment. You pays your money, you takes your choice! My room was fine, and as requested, quiet. The food was ok if not entirely memorable and the service friendly and helpful. I'd stay there again if I had to spend a night in Manchester centre!

Room tip: Stay away from the main street!

Stayed here before a morning flight the next day. The hotel looks great from the outside, and varies from nice and 'period' inside to needing an update in places.

This time I had an 'executive double' which is actually split over two floors. I chose it for this novelty feature, and although it was OK I probably won't choose this 2-level type of room again. The staircase from the upper floor to the lower is effectively the fire exit for the upper bedroom, so it has quite a brightly lit green Fire Exit sign which I don't think can be turned off (naturally one would assume it can't, but I looked anyway). Even though it's facing away from the lower bed, it lights up the room enough that it interrupted my sleep a few times.

Last time here I had a single room on a high floor and it was fine.

Hotel location : It's about 10 minutes from Piccadilly station and from there 15 minutes to the airport by train. If you don't want to stay right at the airport, it's a good option.

One annoyance at check-in: they charge a couple of GBP extra for credit card usage, so to avoid that either pay cash or pay on the internet site you probably booked it from. It's not so bad but just an irritant.

High floors were quiet but the lifts can be a bit noisy.

Room tip: Away from the lifts ... there was a regular rumbling noise from them when I was close by.
