We cannot say enough about how delighted we were with our stay at Casa del Aljarife and wished we could have stayed longer (but we were also interested in spending some time in the Alpujarras mountains). Casa del Aljarife is so beautiful, tranquil, spotlessly clean, and impeccably maintained, but with the wonderful classic character fully intact. Our room had a full-on sunset view of the amazing Alhambra!
We dubbed Christian Most "The host with the Most" shortly after our arrival, when I realized I'd left my very favorite overcoat on the bus on the way into town from the airport. We asked him if he knew how to find out about a lost-and-found. He said the simplest thing would be for him to head down the hill and look for a number to call on the bus signs. I was like "Jeez! I hate to put you to trouble over my stupid mistake" but he insisted it was no trouble and that he was heading down that way for a bite of lunch anyway : ) Really nice of him. BUT THEN, when we saw him later, before I could even ask him if he'd found out any info, he handed me my coat!!! I was in disbelief at first and told him he pulling my leg. I was sure it was just some coat that matched my description that he happened to have around. But no, he'd somehow retrieved it from a city bus in the downtown area of a busy city! He said he saw a bus coming along the main road and asked, and it happened to be the same bus, and the driver had my coat! It didn't seem to surprise him, but it sure impressed me. Miracle worker. The host with the Most! (I found it hilariously charming that he'd never heard this phrase before, and didn't really seem to get it, but seemed to understand that it was meant in appreciation and was happy about it).
Casa del Aljarife is so peaceful and tranquil. Comfy beds, lovely bathroom, interesting room layout. Mr. Most's restaurant, tapas, and wine bar recommendations, and the accompanying map, were excellent and extremely helpful (the restaurants are EXACTLY where the numbers are). We dined wonderfully thanks to them. Breakfast was delightful, healthy, lots of variety, but simple and not overwhelming, and served in a charming room off the beautiful and peaceful patio. We had breakfast with a fascinating and hilarious British couple who we missed once we'd gone. We can't wait to go back someday. Thank you Mr. Most!
Also, we went in the "off-season" (Nov), but it seemed to us like the ideal time to go. The weather in November was perfect for touring, not to cold, not too hot. Light jacket over a t-shirt was fine. We hear that during the main season, the lines can be longer, restaurants a little harder to get into, and it's generally a little more crowded. In the quiet season, the lovely Granadinos are even happier to see you, and there are many discounts too, so think about it!
