Some great detailed reviews here. About locations. We preferred this location to anything in the very center. But remember, it is such a small downtown, that the hotel is easily walking distance to most everything including the tram lines that you should make frequent use of while there, but without having you stay on the busy DAM and other squares that feel in our humble opinion, too touristy. This location makes you feel "like a local". We thought the area around the hotel at everything we needed in terms of eats/drinks/coffee/etc. We would explore all day and come back to the little area by the hotel to relax and drink/eat. We stayed in the new back room. Amazing floor to ceiling windows and large room. Very comfy bed. The bathroom was wonderful. You can not beat this place for setting the mood of Amsterdam and leaving the busy parts of the downtown quarter to the tourist (even if you are one)!
1. Go to http://www.like-a-local.com/ to book a dinner with a local your first night. We did, and had a wonderful meal and obtained all sorts of advice with someone living there. Truly the best part of the vacation.
2. Get 24, 48, 72 hours or more tram/bus/metro pass at GVT station outside Amsterdam Central Station. It will pay for itself in more then two uses per day! We used the trams all the time.
3. Try Indonesian as its such a part of the culture there (former colony). The food is so good!
4. Get the Lonely Planet AMSTERDAM app for your iphone -- wonderful suggestions and tool.
