I don't really wish to share how wonderful the Hotel Martin is with anyone because it is our very own little bijou of a discovery, that we would rather selfishly prefer to keep to ourselves, however, with the rare occurrence of the recent negative comments , the Hotel Martin deserves that we now reccount our positive experiences to redress the criticisms it has received.
We return to Hotel Martin every year in March/April for a large mixed age family holiday, where we are extremely appreciative of the fact that we get a wonderful return for our money. The hotel is a three star, and warrents each one of them in shining gold. Skiers within our group have skied most of the elegant resorts in Europe and stayed in equally the most elegant hotels/chalets, but the Hotel Martin triumphs for true aficionados of all the finer things in life.
Sauze provides the nightly animation and welcome that the young in our group seek, and us also when the halcyon combination of a fine supper and good wine fools us into believing that we can still dance like John Travolta. Only in the ageless society that is Italy exists the joy derived from an entire family "clubbing" together!
Sauze provides superb skiing with the Via Lattea. One most EMPHATIC word of warning, pay for ski lift passes on your credit card, confusion to your distinct financial disadvantage seems to reign where any cash counting is concerned. Special mention to Orso Bianco.......still the BEST place to eat, and the MOST friendly management and staff, who this year provided us with precious memories on the day of daughter's engagement. Cicci's at Sarnas is also well worth visiting.
Without wishing for any readers of this to be tempted into visitng Hotel Martin ( remembering that we are possessive of our discovery), Max (an Adonis in salopettes) and Romina (Monica Bellucci in an apron) are indisputably wonderful hosts, providing not merely the standard generic soulless 3* service , but with far more.
As a culinary arts teacher , I would defend to the last teaspoon the criticisms levelled at the food service delivered at the Martin, where the cuisine is a fine example of the regional anthropological history of this country. Critics of this freshly prepared, Piemonte fare sadly only only reveal their own sensory limitations. Sad also is the fact that sliding down mountains with skis attached to my feet does little to alleviate the extra kilos that my appreciation of the delectable nourriture attracts!
So be aware, fine food is plentiful, and this year was even bespoke, as on the evening of aforementioned daughter's engagement, Romina painstakingly prepared every morsel, from bread to polenta to potato in the shape of a heart.. Mattias, the waiter, is quiet, proficient and always keen to cater to our every whim. The breakfasts are continental, (with fette biscottate or "French toasts" in packets) but fresh cooked eggs and bacon are available on request, although yoghurt, cake, salami, ham, cheese, eggs, fruit cereal seems to suffice for us!
Rooms are comfortable and conducive to a good night's sleep, are cleaned every day and towels changed without fail.
We always fly with BA and organise private transfers to the hotel, so that all of our dealings flow exceedingly well, even with all of the pitfalls that travelling in a group of 20+ brings.
Our return is ritual, and much anticipated from the moment in which our weight returns to normal! We wholeheartedly recommend this Hotel, but don't tell too many people!
