My wife and I spent 3 nights (27-30 May, 2010) here. We had bought a package consisting of breakfast & dinners, tastings of wines, a boat trip at the Mosel, "Waffel im Garten" etc. The city of Bernkastel-Kues is a fantastic place to enjoy medevial architecture and athmosphere. One day we hiked (went by feet) through the wonderful landscape up to the medevial castle - and even much higher - passing through grapewine areas and a beautiful forest. The view from the top, overlooking the Mosel and the landscape around it, was really enjoyable. The next day we rented bicycles and went downwards the Mosel to Traben-Trarbach (20 kilometers.) We stopped at a couple of Weinstuben to taste the local wine... The distance is very simple to ride! After having a wonderful German lunch, we went back with a sightseeing boat (we and many others brought the bicycles onboard for the ca. 2 hrs ride (cost 11-12 Euro per person incl. the bike).
The service at the hotel was very friendly and nice, and the three breakfasts as well as the three dinners (3, 4 and 5 courses resp.) we had, was very good. The hotel building is very old indeed (from approx. year 1665, I think), and the interior typical & local. The rooms (we looked at three of them before finally deciding in which one to stay) are off course not top modern, however really OK (if you doen't expect to much). Due to the narrow streets and squares, they are rather dark. Our double bed had two different mattresses (one quite good, the other one terrible hard), and after commenting on that, the staff put some blankets on top of that mattress (under the sheet).
We were indeed very satisfied with our stay, and we want to come back to this charming hotel and the beautiful city!
