Ever since our honeymoon at Baros Maldives, my husband and I have always wanted to go back to the Maldives for another romantice getaway. So when Six Senses Laamu opened this year and had an opening special, we leapt at the chance. We travelled with his parents and took 2 separate water villas. The journey to Laamu was a little tedious as we had to take another 45min internal flight from Male airport, and then hop onto a 20min speed boat ride. The transfers all the way was well taken care of by the Six Senses representatives, however, I was a little surprised when they did not offer the guests any water or cold towel during the speed boat ride after the long journey getting there. I had assumed that this was the standard practise for a resort like Six Senses.
As we arrived at Six Senses Laamu well past midnight, the check-in was done swiftly and room keys issued quickly for all teh guests. Unfortunately, they gave us the wrong key for our villa and we couldn't lock our door for that night. They were the only resort on the atoll so we had to take the chance that it would be safe. They had prepared some fruit juice and sandwiches for us in the room, so that was a nice touch.

The water villa itself was very spacious and lived up to the Six Senses pledge of being eco-friendly. It has a big spacious sun deck and a huge day bed for lounging. The most interesting part of the room for me was the glass bath tub. It was sitting over a glass floor and you can see right through to the sea bed while soaking in the bath! How cool is that? The room has all the standard amentities and comes with a Bose system as well. As with all water villas in the Maldives, they always lead you into the water, but just be careful here as the water level is quite high and you will not be able to stand on the sea bed, even during low tide.
The atoll is very big and so the resort is quite spread out. All the villas will be provide with bicycles as it is quite a long walk for most villas to the lobby and dining areas. However, I have to say that the bicycles provided are not that easy to ride, especially on sand, so this may not be an ideal way of commuting for older folks. My parents-in-law couldn't manage the bicycles so had to call for buggy service to get around. It's about 10-15 mins walk from the villas to the restaurants but could be unpleasant during the warm day.
There are several restaurants on at the resort and we were fortunate that our half board package allowed us to try most of them. Generally, the quality of the food is quite good and I especially enjoyed their very sumptious and healthy breakfast offerings. They also make their own ice cream and you definitely must save some room for them during their buffett nights!
Service wise, I wasn't particularly impressed. Not that there were any bad experiences, it's just that there wasn't anything exceptional to shout about. You generally get the usual "good morning" and "good evening" greetings, the standard service expected of this type of resort, but I somehow felt a lack of genuinity? I do see a certain level of warmth in some of the foreign staff, but it could be a cultural thing.
The biggest highlight for me during this trip was spotting a school of dolphins while resting at the resort lounge. Imagine, I didn't have to pay to go on a speed boat trip for that! In fact, I was told that it is not uncommon to be able to spot dolphins swimming from some parts of the resort, usually in the mornings and evenings. For those who are into snorkelling, I have to say that I did not find their house reef very interesting. I'm not sure if it was due to the southwest monsoon, but the variety of marine life was rather limited during the period I was there. The house reef is also not very big. You also won't be able to spot many fish around the water villas as there are no live corals around the water villas. Best to take a day trip out somewhere if you really want some proper snorkelling experience.
This would be a nice place if it's the first time you are going to the Maldives, but for me, I would chose a smaller, more intimate atoll for my next trip!More
