My wife and I have just arrived back from a fairly last-minute week in Morzine. Originally we tried to book the Viking hotel but upon enquiry we were told it was full and were offered a room at Le petit Cheval Blanc. It was a good price and so after looking at the fairly mixed reviews we plumped for it, with a sense of humour and few expectations.
However, we were both very pleasantly surprised. Yes the accommodation is basic and dated - but it's 2* ski accommodation so what do you expect. The room was larger than many we'd stayed in and had not only a proper double (not just two singles pushed together) and a single bed. It was clean and (very) warm.
Pierre was fine - a real character, but not rude or insane, just interesting. He and his wife try their best to make sure everyone is looked after and even came round and kissed/shook hands with all the guests staying there on NYE. The location was a little bit further out than I'd have liked but once we sorted out which buses (Bus A and D) went from where and at what time that wasn't an issue, and even the stumble up the hill after the bars wasn't too bad.
The best thing was probably the dinner (breakfast was very low key with just bread/croissants and cereal) with high quality, authentic French food each night. No complaints there at all either.
All in all a really good week, lots of snow, relatively low-cost and more than adequate standard of accommodation. We'd even go back again if visiting Morzine another time.
