We've returned here many times - that should say something - usually for a couple of weeks. The large complex has rental apartments as well as permanent residents, plus a multi-level food/retail/office court with underground parking. It's across from Rydges and a taxi stand. Small indoor pool and rooftop tennis court. It's not a new building and is showing some age, so renovations/upgrades are now underway. The parliament is a long block away (past Pellegrinis), with easy walking access to Collins Street's upscale shopping, trams, trains, theatres, museums, etc. The Crown entertainment complex is a short stroll away, as are Vic Market and the sports complexes. The Paramount is essentially in China Town, so dozens of restaurants in all price ranges. Woolie's supermarket a bit over 2 blocks away, as is David Jones. The small staff is friendly and responsive to requests. There is a well-managed conference venue attached, as well. Apartments are roomy and furnished minimally, but adequately if you're not expecting too much. Kitchens include oven, dishwasher, toaster, micro, etc., and a decent assortment of dishes and utensils. Bring your own roasting pan and condiments, and a decent knives if you're a serious foodie. Instant coffee and tea are provided. Laundry closet in bathroom; bring detergent. WiFi for a fee. We always enjoy our stays here with the combination of adequate accommodations, a very nice staff, and a great location. Be forewarned: we travel on business and are not looking for a spiffy upscale experience, so our "very good" rather than "average" (no 3.5 possible) is because for us The Paramount is a near perfect base in Melbourne and feels like our home away from home. If you try it, we'd wish the same for you.
Higher floors are better because of view and less street noise.
